Would it be of interest for someone to set up an /m/abandonedcommunities or /m/findamod or even some /m/revivedcommunities magazine to act as a megaphone for revived communities of interest, or to bring attention to unused communities? I know there's abandoned list but it's effectively a big wall of communities.

Woah. #gitlab really is planning to federate with #ActivityPub. 🤯

Would it be acceptable in kbin etiquette to add a tag in at least one thread in a magazine I created, and when talking about stuff in other places that touch the same topic, I use the same tag there as well to "promote" the existence of the magazine?

daredevil,
@daredevil@kbin.social avatar

@Damaskox I'd imagine it's alright, as long as you aren't doing so excessively. Other magazines/places might have a rule or disclaimer in the sidebar that will give you a rough idea on how they feel about it. In fact, I'd say that's almost encouraged in addition to being one of the features I appreciate the most about /kbin compared to lemmy or reddit.

ernest,
@ernest@kbin.social avatar

@Damaskox The magazine tags work in a way that automatically adds content to it that someone has tagged, for example, on Mastodon. The magazine's name is automatically a tag. I've seen comments on this matter, and I'll be addressing it soon to improve the mechanism and provide a detailed description of its operation in the admin panel. So, for example, all posts tagged on the microblog will be included in the magazine "books," but you can add a tag like in the panel if you want those tags to be included as well.

My name is Veronica and I don't know how to use kbin. :P

Has anyone written up an explainer for kbin for folks who never really understood Reddit?

Also, can I comment on a PeerTube video from here? I tried it on one of mine and it didn't seem to work.

Anyway, I'm new. Hi!

vkc,
@vkc@kbin.social avatar

@ernest Thank you! I take it you work on this site, if so thank you and I'm sorry for being such a newb.

ernest,
@ernest@kbin.social avatar

@vkc Don't worry. In the near future, we'll be working on integrating with, among others, Peertube. For now, you can search for people from Peertube and follow their accounts, for example, "warroza@tube.pol.social." At some point, their content will start appearing in your feed ;) Enjoy.

How do I add an image to a magazine so it's visible without clicking (image) links?
Didn't find info about it when searching.

Add a ! Before the link brackets

@jared I actually noticed that there was a graphical tab in the magazine settings where the image was added.
It was just in a different place than what I thought.

Ok hive mind!

I am looking for sources for watching science documentaries (NOVA, Nature, National Geographic, BBC Earth... And other awesome stuff I probably don't even know about) that isn't via YouTube. I am fed up with their unrelenting greed.

So need suggestions on doc-heavy streaming services, and/or a #peerTube buddy to help me find stuff if it's there, and/or advice on an applebox app that filters out these unrelenting intrusive ads on YouTube. 😤

@vlrny A $60 per year donation will grant you access to PBS Passport. Plenty of documentaries and more, plus it's supporting a good cause.

ActivityPub could be a little more portable through the use of OIDC. You could even separate identities from instances!

ALostInquirer,

Thanks, I’ll have to read up on that!

sickmatter,
@sickmatter@fedia.io avatar

@ALostInquirer
Let me know if it ends up making any sense. I use this (alongside a few other ways of authenticating), and I still find the details a bit hard to follow. Configuring it in an application is the easy part; figuring out how it all interacts with your own system can get complicated if you need more info than what’s provided in the user info endpoint (honestly more of an enterprise problem than something we deal with outside of the office)

Is https://firefish.social usually so slow? Was looking to see how things changed since I last heard about it and man that instance is SUPER slow to load everything, is this an instance issue or a firefish issue?

#firefish #fediverse

maegul,
@maegul@hachyderm.io avatar

@Arataka at the moment it seems to be a dead instance. Too many problems too often with an admin distracted by other things now and not actively maintaining the instance.

Unless there’s contrary information and I’m out of the loop I’d say stay away and consider firefish to be a bit more hype than it’s worth. Other Misskey forks are out there.

Arataka,
@Arataka@esper.lol avatar

@maegul Ah, yeah I was looking to mess around with some other federated software, I might see how Sharkey is seeing that is also uses the Mastodon API which is a must if you want to use any good mobile apps lol.

Good effort!

Couple things: The first line of your toot becomes the Lemmy post title so keep it short and don’t add any tags (they format weirdly). Also if you tag multiple communities it’ll only post to the first.

Goood morning and happy Wednesday #Fediverse. How has everyone’s week been so far?

Let’s kick off today with our #KoffeeWithKyle chat and discuss what our plans are for today. Anything exciting or just the usual?

For me, I’m currently sitting at a local coffee shop waiting for a client’s office to open so I can make a quick service call. Then it’s off to the office for the usual. Later will be just relaxing.

There’s a major convergence of OAuth/OIDC support across applications, is going all-in on it as its root default, and other social web protocols are tagging along as well.

Like the separation of church and state, it seems prudent to keep the management of our digital identities separate from our social network servers.

Domain-based OIDC accounts, especially when self-hosted, serve the function of a minimum-viable

Youtube is full of breathless "science" reporting videos that are full of mostly nonsense, especially when anything remotely related to quantum physics is involved. They give questionable and misleading (if not outright fallacious) descriptions of physics and then uncritically accept the findings and most sensational interpretations of freshly published research papers that haven't been fully vetted or even reproduced by the greater science community.

tschenkel,
@tschenkel@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@thezerobit

I'd wager you'll find that's the case with anything you're an expert in.

Some topics (like QM) more so than others, because they have a certain coolness factor for the uninitiated.

For me it's Aerodynamics. So much so that my first year lecture includes an implicit warning in the induction lecture.

There's a massive catch22 with YouTube: (a) there's a lot of good stuff, and a lot of bad stuff. (b) In order to distinguish between the two, you need to be an expert. So what do you do if you want to use YouTube to learn something new and haven't at least got a good background in balony detection?
