yes, i agree. this has bothered me since inception

i donate financially to kbin, and i dont use it other than as a remote, federating platform. the outage means nothing to me personally.

still would be nice to get a little administrative communication on a system designed for.. ya know, communication.

its not the outage that bothers me, its the complete lack of communication.

url link blocking. What happened to it. (kbin.social)

So when someone submitted a url at least at one point it would show up on the right and you could block it. So if someone posted a newsweek link you could block any link postings from like newsweek.com or maybe reddit.com or google.com. Lately though I have not been able to. It seemed to disapear at some point. I have not seen...

i really like this idea, and i can't believe it doesnt exist.

it sounds like it did exist, but for some technical reason it was removed.. it could be something very innocuous like the code was terrible, and needed a rewrite, or a library was used that needed to no longer be used and it has not yet been replaced.

@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

how can it be hot if it has zero upvotes? seems pretty not-hot to me

originalucifer,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

i agree, i think your argument is 'why arent my own posts automatically liked by me'

call me a pedant but it hurts me to hear a category labeled hot, that has not had literally any user related activity. those 2 things are incompatible. just swap hot for new and call it day

hot to me is an 'activity over time' metric, and zero doesnt play nice

I'm getting tired of making generally bad OC

I’ve made quite a few posts to /c/risa that are actual OC. I’m either horrible at humor, the timing is bad, or it doesn’t work for whatever reason. Extremely low effort memes? Lots of upvotes. If I do high effort stuff that takes an hour or more, I’m just discouraged by the lack of even comments....

originalucifer,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

if its a chore you shouldnt be doing it. it should be fun!

for me its a bursting outlet for my nonsense.. not reeallly considering the audience when im creating stuff. i just need to get it out of my brain before it burns a hole.

ive also been surprised by some of the easiest stuff garnering the most attention.

alllllsoo.. ive noticed in the verse this kinda of delayed reaction. ive gotten posts that suddenly gain attention months later as the fediverse does its thing, and the content gets refreshed out there..somewhere.

the lemmy changes are causing excessive resource use on my 'bin instance. so yeah, not using lemmy, but being directly affected by the lemmy snafu.

my failed messaging queue is filling, which has its own retry logic.. that queue buildup also takes disk space.... extra processing, extra disk space.. this leads to 'worker' slowdown and then system failures and timeouts.

your thought process isnt completely off. if my server product was detecting the failures correctly, these resources wouldnt pile up.

i dont think people really understand just how brand new all this stuff is. 'the fediverse' is under active development. they call it the 'bleed edge' of technology because its painful. most fediverse servers are experiencing growing pains of some sort.

the Lemmy/kbin sides are still wet behind the ears. i just hope people dont give up!

originalucifer,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

there is indeed something weird going on with lemmy. i noticed some feeds from lemm.ee are down, and the logs from my instance are filling up with bot rejections from lemmy.world, ie they are blocking bot traffic. i thought i read something about the new version of lemmy breaking some inter-lemmy fed traffic.

the error messages piling up are bad for my 'bin instance due to the retry methods used... extra processing, disk space starts to fill up.. resources just start piling up so i'm having to manually dump things regularly for the last 24-36 hours.

feasible kbin.social is also having some of the same problems i am

im going to treat it like any other email instance server. trust until they give me a reason not to, and then known contingencies can be implemented.

originalucifer,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

yeah thats not how protocols work, and 'we' dont really know what their implementation of this open protocol is going to look like.

but yeah, you can knee jerk yourself up all ya want. have fun. im not going to care about this issue until it becomes an issue.

you dont have people/world/fuckinganyone blocking facebooks email servers out of pure spite.

originalucifer,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

Federation is a firehose.

this is just not true, sorry. instances only retrieve/pushed specified actions/actors. . pretending it is is ridiculous. this is now a new unknown, this is how the ap protocol works.

and your shit is already public, if they want to suck it all in there is literally nothing stopping them right now. federation or not.

originalucifer,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

whatever. i hate facebook, i dont use their crap. but im not going out of my way to block their AP protocol any more than i would their SMTP protocol.

when their activity in a specific context demonstrably, negatively affects my system, ill take action as i would any negative impact from any protocol on any of my services.

when i get a spammer, i block them. but again, im not going out of my way to spite some big asshole company, and potentially lose out on coordinating an offramp for those trapped in its walls.

everyone here as proven one thing: there is no technical reason to block threads. its entirely political/moral/spite and a lot of 'maybes'.

originalucifer,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

The Fediverse == A federation
startrek == The Federation

i seem room for slang here, and im messy.

The Fediverse == The federation ??

i think i fixed that link. posting inline images/links seems a bit wonky from my instance. drivin me bonkers

originalucifer,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

try this..
click 'magazines' at the top
then type in the name of the remote community you want, like 'funny'.. it should then show you all those remote communities and the local one.... click the community you want to post in
then you should see a banner at the top reminding you youre looking at a local version of a remote community, click the '+' sign and select the post type... this will initiate a new thread.

originalucifer,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

bummer. i know they arent all that easy to keep running.. i wish there was a place admins could offer an instance up to other sysadmins instead of abandoning it.

id love to be able to help

What are your thoughts on Microblogs vs threads? (kbin.social)

When I first joined Kbin I posted threads due to being a reddit refugee but have started posting microblogs as time went on. I have also noticed some magazines have more threads while others have more microblog posts. For example kbinmeta has more threads while the most active magazine I moderate has mostly microblogs.

originalucifer,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

i like kbin because it had both. i want a piece of federating software that implements as much of the activitypub protocol as possible, and then maybe lets server admins decide what they want to actually federate.

i see a lot of talk about upvotes/downvotes what should or should not be pushed in or out. i dont think thats really a devs decision.
if its part of the protocol, it should be implemented and configurable.

originalucifer,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

meh. its the apples of twitter to the oranges of reddit.

i hate hashtags, i cant stand using them, and i have no problems watching news pop up instantly on my mbin feed. with the subscription base i have, and the auto loading feature i can doomscroll all day. soooo not sure where most of your issues are coming from..

now the peertube thing, that is in the works. i know devs are actually working in implementing peertube interoperability... at least on mbin

isnt carbon monoxide the silent killer? why dont we use that (if were so insistent on killing humans)

originalucifer,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

i tried paying for my time at the no free diving site near me, but theres never anyone available. feels like im stealing!

originalucifer,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

ive had the same experience. i think a remote moderation ability may help spread the moderation load around... that possible?

originalucifer,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

dunno, i kinda got into running an instance after reading about all the hard work you put into it. it would be hard for me to separate the ernest from the kbin ... so, dont do that?

take your time, take care of yours. this shit will be here
