I am very typical earthling. I like earth food and earth drink and earth sports and earth media. Im all about earth things because I am so typical and earthling. so typical as to be very boring and not worth investigating or looking into because I am definately from earth.

So far don't see the option but ready to jump on it.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

actually I don't. I read this on kbinmeta and thought it was a general improvement to kbin. oh well.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I don't use a smartphone. im a smartphone luddite. Heck I don't even have a cell phone on me often unless I know I need it (expecting a call or oncall)

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

thanks. I actually was seeing something similar at the start of the weekend but it sorta reveresed on me where sub works and newest gives me the 404. I have been looking through my sub and I am seeing lemmy mags. Thanks for the feedback.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I saw some comments around this and did seem about the same time the 404's started. maybe thats it.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

its open source. it can and has been forked. he can do what he likes. The call for moderation made sense but code is different. Granted I think he should bring in help for himself but that is for him to decide.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

The time away almost seems like a benefit now. It gave people a chance to grumble and you have responded to many of the complaints from that time in this one post. Great on you for listening and responding to the community.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I wonder if there is a way for federation to not bring over comments from federated accounts under a certain age to give the admins a chance to remove them?

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I have literally never seen posts like that. I like kbin well enough and tend to defend it somewhat but trolls/shilling thats just redic.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

many forks have merged improvements from the other project in both directions when the licenses allow for it.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

Thats not what you describe. Troll is used the way you did in my response to you. A reference to other people trolling in some other threads. Not accusations of the main post being a troll. At least that is the way im reading it. I guess I just assume your first comment was refering to more blatant type posts or replies.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

you know I think one of the smarter things facebook did was only allowing edu emails initially or google allowing current users to send invites.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

not for spammers. it was a nice first level filter till they had the resources to do more effective spam fighting (which they don't do all that well)

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I did not work at either at levels where I would know their reasons but whatever their reasons it did make growth in the start slow and steady.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

Why don't automated spam systems use them then? Its easy for an individual but its not super automately like google. At least at my alma matter its not.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

yeah thats for an an individual though. A robotic spam account that needs to make a thousand accounts automatically is not going to make one so easily. spam from individuals is much easier to deal with than machine spam.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

Yeah I had no idea they could be bought it bulk. I thought you had to be registered. Granted there are all the for profit colleges now. Would not be surprised if they straight sold them directly.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

yup one of those mental blindness things I think. Even after you said I could not find it and then did a control f and low and behold its like right there. don't know how I did not see it. even has a mail icon.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

yeah morgunkorn explained it and I was just having some mental blindness or something. im smacking my head at how its location is right where you would think it would be. don't know how I missed it.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

thanks. that is good to know. its a rare thing but once in awhile I want to message someone.

url link blocking. What happened to it. (kbin.social)

So when someone submitted a url at least at one point it would show up on the right and you could block it. So if someone posted a newsweek link you could block any link postings from like newsweek.com or maybe reddit.com or google.com. Lately though I have not been able to. It seemed to disapear at some point. I have not seen...

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

yeah it definately existed at one point and was likely the most effective blocking tool compared to user level and magazine level.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

thank you so much. I guess its just not as obvious as before.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

Honestly I would be fine if new accounts could not post at all for a bit. There was a big issue of no one posting content when folks were coming here from reddit. I think that is because it was regular folk and many of us follow a pattern of hanging out and getting comfortable and then replying to stuff and eventually posting stuff. this is how real human beings are which is why people were sorta gung ho to bot copy pasta from reddit but I like how humans are. Granted personality will effect this. type A maybe will engage sooner or such. Anyway I would have been fine if I could read only for a week and then reply only for a month and then finally be allowed to post. If someone becomes a mod non of these limits would apply to magazines they mod. Not sure how this would work with federation though. I still would love to sign up for others block lists. I like this user so I want to auto block anyone they block. I really like things to be controllable at the user level.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

thank you. I was thinking in terms of an account so had not thought to report it from a message standpoint which on hindsite makes more sense.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I use a browser on pc and its never obscured the text once expanded for me.

[UPDATE] Issues with the functioning of kbin.social (kbin.social)

The main issues with the improper functioning of the instance have been resolved, but it led to additional complications. Currently, using the instance should be quite comfortable, but I will continue to work intensively on a comprehensive solution for the next few days. Thank you so much ernest. I was able to go to my subscriptions, and all, and notifications today and look at them by all and all the normal stuff. For a second there I thought there was something going on!!!

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

its gotten worse for me. I used to be able to see my notification but now get 404 for that to.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I think he assume you read the comment he put in his comment when you where commenting. Which is pretty short and this is it:

"They paid the moral debt with interest when they forced Africa to stop enslaving their own people to sell them.

Anyone who doesn’t know this is unqualified to speak about it or is being dishonest."

I do get your point which was europe had stopped doing slavery themselves (tacitly given peasants, indentured servitude, wager slavery [which under globalism increased greatly]) but were fine buying them as a commodity and then just deciding they can commoditization the whole race given how different they looked (one reason natives were not enslaved on that scale). Thing with commoditization slavery is it really treated slaves like a commodity and was more brutal than the type of slavery taking place in africa and more seen in history. For anyone or anyone I am in no way condoing or endorsing slavery but it is a complicated historical subject but I would rather have been a slave in many cultures than the typical american colony one or a typical dark ages peasant.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I think it comes down to sins. You can't make up for killing someone by saving a bunch of lives. Now it can be a powerful personal motivator but part of that motivator is recognizing it can never be made ok.

HubertManne, (edited )
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

oh well that makes sense. the idea money is going to somehow make slavery alright is crazy to. I likely missed context due to just reading a link to a comment from another thread so I missed a lot since the one person just brought it up.

Could there be a "Filter" button for magazines? (kbin.social)

I know there's block, but "block" currently blacklists the entire magazine. If I click on it, it wipes all the threads on /all/, prevents me from looking at threads on the magazine landing page and all comments in the threads should I venture in. A "filter" would be a soft block that just clears it from my feed on the main page....

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I like this. Would also make it easier to double check your blocks in case something improved.

Scientist, after decades of study, concludes: We don't have free will (phys.org)

Before epilepsy was understood to be a neurological condition, people believed it was caused by the moon, or by phlegm in the brain. They condemned seizures as evidence of witchcraft or demonic possession, and killed or castrated sufferers to prevent them from passing tainted blood to a new generation.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

Assuming his hypothesis is true I find this rediculous from the article:

"The world is really screwed up and made much, much more unfair by the fact that we reward people and punish people for things they have no control over," Sapolsky said. "We've got no free will. Stop attributing stuff to us that isn't there."

How is it made more so. We have no free will over how we reward or punish people. If the world is screwed up and his hypothesis correct then its exactly as screwed up as its supposed to be and our lack of decision neither make it worse or better. It just is.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

Yeah I am more inclined to watch something from decades ago than something from this year.

Brazil and Argentina turn to blockchain for citizen ID rollouts (www.biometricupdate.com)

Blockchain adoption is on the rise in Latin America as citizens in the region are increasingly inclined towards transacting using cryptocurrencies. The trend has been gaining traction since El Salvador became the first nation in the world to adopt Bitcoin as an official form of currency in 2021.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I hate when an article about a possible good use of blockchain like in a national id shoves in mention of bitcoin one of the worst usese of blockchain.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

It is not necessarily the best way but keep in mind that blockchain does not mean peer to peer. The government systems can retain the ability to be authoritative.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

Yeah I don't have an answer. I could look it up but my comment was not blockchain is the best thing to use for this scenario but that this was a better use of blockchain than crypto (the real but is I dont' feel like it atm).

unfortunately 65% is just the population of the 15 largest states.

Silent but not untraumatic and painless. Basically inert gases you don't even realize your not getting oxygen and carbon monoxide is similar but you take it up and it causes many horrible symptoms. For details a combination of these will explain it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asphyxiant_gas
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_monoxide_poisoning#Signs_and_symptoms

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I agree here. I don't think we should be doing the death penalty but if it has to be done an inert gas is the least bad way.

From cage-free chicks to puppy mills and Avian flu: Republicans are trying to roll back animal protections in the U.S. (www.theguardian.com)

The Republican-led Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression, or Eats, Act aims to end the authority of states and localities to set animal welfare and food safety standards. If passed, it could also jeopardize more than 1,000 state and local health and safety laws that set food-quality requirements and stop the spread of invasive...

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

At their best republicans are pretty crappy but its super villian in a lair stuff like this which makes it impossible for me to understand how anyone can vote for this party.

Why healthcare workers are worried about possible changes to masking protocols in hospitals (www.popsci.com)

The CDC says the draft guidelines are not final. Nurses, researchers, and workplace safety officers worry new guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention might reduce protection against the coronavirus and other airborne pathogens in hospitals.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

All health care settings should require masks all around all the time at this point. It would be the best way to blunt spikes or new outbreaks without a more general mask mandates.

In some cases they work for a employer. The successful type ones, although I guess im not real sure if you can call someone who can't get workers and employer anymore. So the more I think of it he is right. There are business owners and then there are successful business owners which can also be called employers.
