I've been testing out Mbin on the kbin.run instance and it sure feels faster but it also feels empty and I'm pretty sure it's because Kbin / Mbin requires someone to have searched for a user or community/magazine before you can actually see it. Seems like this could hinder smaller instances in the long run.

It looks like is getting some free press lately, so now is a good time to let everybody know again that I have a peertube instance at https://video.surazal.net

My main account is at @zalasur which you can follow from Mastodon.

I do mainly live streams there but I also upload my canning and fractal zoom videos as well, and whatever else I feel like doing 😄

🤩 Aren't you just delighted by all those proprietary software apps for the #Fediverse?

😮 Don't be. Each time you choose proprietary you help turn the fedi slowly in the direction of the usual corporate hellscape that the rest of the Web already is.

😨 And then we end up in an online space where for years we can complain to each other how we squandered an opportunity and how #capitalism won once more.

🎯 Use #FOSS apps instead, created by the public for the public.

🌻 Keep the Fediverse open.

@smallcircles @mativity other than directly naming explaining to non-geeky people which iOS apps are proprietary and which are FOSS, what alternative communication strategy do you think might be helpful?

Brendanjones,
@Brendanjones@fosstodon.org avatar

@smallcircles which iOS clients are FOSS? I'd happily choose a FOSS option over proprietary if it had feature and design parity with the existing options (or near to it, and I could meaningfully contribute).

I wonder what stops app developers building open? It's such a cutthroat space, could code stealing (without attribution) be a concern leading them to take the easier option of closed code?

Managing hashtags submitted with an #ActivityPub note is not as simple as you'd think. Hashtags are collected into a separate node in the Note object.

Firefish and Friendica for example, have their hashtag entry below the content. You've got to do cartwheels to combine those with any a user may have added in the note text itself, removing duplicates.

Then ensure you maintain the integrity of the note text but also add any missing tags so they are visible to end users.

Do you know there's a #fediverse alternative to Amazon-owned #Goodreads? #BookWyrm is a social network for tracking your reading, writing reviews, and discovering what to read next. You can follow and interact with users on different #BookWyrm instances and on #Mastodon. You can import from a Goodreads CSV export. You can create private shelves and curated lists. This tool lets me monitor the federation traffic from/to my Mastodon instance metalhead.club.

You can clearly see the other server locations - mainly in the US and Europe.

The tool is not ready for the public, but once it's finished and stable, I'll let you know :)

Video is showing a 3D globe in a web browser. Colorful arcs across cities in the globe show active ActivityPub connections.

You might find packets of stevia on restaurant tables and store shelves. Stevia can also be found in many other products you eat. If you’re eating products marketed as low calorie, check the ingredients list to see what type of sweetener was used.
Currently, there’s no evidence linking stevia to cancer when used in normal amounts. Some research suggests it may even have some health benefits. A number of studies stress the need for more research into the potential benefits and risks of stevia.

Stevia may interact with drugs intended to treat hypertension and diabetes.
In animal studies, stevia didn’t affect fertility or pregnancy outcomes, but research on humans is lacking. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, stevia glycoside products may be consumed in moderation. Steer clear of whole-leaf stevia and crude stevia extracts while pregnant or nursing.

Stevia made with Reb-A is safe to use in moderation during pregnancy. If you’re sensitive to sugar alcohols, choose a brand that doesn’t contain erythritol.
Whole-leaf stevia and crude stevia extract, including stevia you’ve grown at home, are not safe to use if you’re pregnant.
It may seem strange that a highly refined product is considered safer than a natural one. This is a common mystery with herbal products.

Stevia, a zero-calorie sugar substitute, is recognized as safe by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). In vitro and in vivo studies showed that stevia has antiglycemic action and antioxidant effects in adipose tissue and the vascular wall, reduces blood pressure levels and hepatic steatosis, stabilizes the atherosclerotic plaque, and ameliorates liver and kidney damage. The metabolism of steviol glycosides is dependent upon gut microbiota, which breaks down glycosides into steviol that can be absorbed by the host. In this review, we elucidated the effects of stevia's consumption on the host's gut microbiota. #Stevia #kombucha #ikombucha_ro #ikombucha

A 2019 study reported a possible link between nonnutritive sweeteners, including stevia, and disruption in beneficial intestinal flora. The same study also suggested nonnutritive sweeteners may induce glucose intolerance and metabolic disorders.
As with most nonnutritive sweeteners, a major downside is the taste. Stevia has a mild, licorice-like taste that’s slightly bitter. Some people enjoy it, but it’s a turn-off for others.
In some people, stevia products made with sugar alcohols may cause digestive problems, such as bloating and diarrhea.

TheBest,

I have IBS and sugar makes it act up. I use stevia extract as a substitute in products, and I AM constantly working on improving my gut biome health. This was a dense but good read.
