When people make a joke, and you just happen to know an exception to the joke, there is no need to make a "well actually" post. Yes, we all realise you can use a search engine. Here, have a cookie.

IT'S A JOKE! ENJOY IT!

Example:

https://mastodon.online/@trs@metasocial.com/109343732202623124

Edit: I'm talking about people who argue why the joke is technically wrong rather than enjoying it. I thought that was obvious, but clearly not.

@veronica :troll: Well, actually there are exceptions to this: you can point out extra facts that even add to the joke.

Do I get a cookie now :ablobcatbongo:

@mray Ok, agree on this. Adding to a joke is a different matter. I meant people who argue against a joke. A "well actually" generally is an argument.

I have been following @milwaukee and @wisconsin from kbin.social and I noticed that starting around a week ago or so, I can post to the communities but new posts and comments don't make it from midwest.social to kbin.social. Is there a federation issue? Was something recently broken?

@reiver Where can I find libraries for creating send-only ? I know that in theory that I just have to make the right GET or POST request, but I don't know what that request looks like or where to make it.

@reiver what’s the deal with decentralised social media protocols … like at a full comprehensive theoretical problem and solution space level.

More directly, what features are reasonably expected but unavailable on the Fedi and which are often expected but unreasonably difficult

Whew! Already at 2400 words written about Fediverse Moderation Tooling, and the potential future directions we can take. This is quite the undertaking!

Yes, most of my time over the past few weeks has been spent writing literature and proposals on moderation tooling, which honestly is an under-appreciated task essentially to improving the fediverse.

I'll also be doing up some slides with a summary of my thoughts for @fediforum.

quaken,

@thisismissem @fediforum Where are you publishing these documents to when they're ready?

thisismissem,
@thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

@quaken @fediforum they'll be available as PDFs and Google Docs.

(If someone wants to create a powerful document editing & collaboration tool for documents in rich text, by all means do, but until that works well, I'll continue using Google Docs, kthnxbye)

@feditips

Suppose someone blocks me. The feeling is mutual, so I want to block them too.

Am I able to block them after they've blocked me?

This is what I call mutual blocking.

Is mutual blocking in the fediverse possible at all?

Is mutual blocking possible on Mastodon?

I don't see these two questions as equal. It could be possible to mutually block at the level of ActivityPub, but also for Mastodon to not have an interface that allows us doing it.

I know on some platform this is not possible. Once you block someone, you vanish out of existence, and they cannot also block you.

However, I'm thinking that it is possible to mutually block one another in the fediverse and Mastodon.

I've searched the web and I haven't found a discussion of this.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@yourautisticlife

As far as I know, there's no direct way to do this in vanilla Mastodon as the menu which includes the block option becomes inaccessible when they block you.

It might be possible on ActivityPub, but not on vanilla Mastodon.

yourautisticlife,
@yourautisticlife@mast.yourautisticlife.com avatar

@feditips

Thanks.

I've not tried it, but I expect that if you can get the username, you could put it in a CSV file and import and merge that file into your block list.

That's a workaround, however.

Question for you multi-social media sites people: what is your favorite and why? Mine is definitely the #Fediverse and my #Mastodon account, it is by far the richest experience on social media. #Twitter feels awkwardly half-dead, half-alive, while #Bluesky is mostly an American wasteland.

chris,
@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca avatar

@jynersolives no longer have Twitter and never signed up for BS. But I get far more diverse engagement here, with nearly the same number of followers as I had on Twitter. And this is with just two or three other people in my local area who have come over. There is no doubt in my mind that if Mastodon/Fedi had the same uptake locally as Twitter, I would probably have to start filtering 😆

Random Thought: I wonder when modern neurotransmitters evolved. The neurotransmitters we know and love (serotonin, gaba, glutamate, dopamine, epinephrine/norepinephrine, histamine ETC) are in use by mammals and reptiles, so i'm guessing like 10-20 million years ago. #science #neuroscience

Fediverse Question 🎶👀:

I'm not a fan of YouTube,
and certainly not of Google (as you might have noticed...), but one thing I'm addicted to YouTube for is instrumental long playlists of music to work.
I. Need. It :blobcatheadphones:🎵

Since I'm always looking for new ways to deGooglelify my life:

Do you know of any PeerTube equivalent for this?
Are there any instrumental long playlists/mixes for work on any PeerTube instances?
Or maybe another Fediverse platform would be preferable for this?

What I personally want more than a good test suite in , and possibly a lower bar, is a good reference implementation.

Specifically, I'd want something that:

  1. Implements all nontrivial requirements of the spec.
  2. Implements a significant percentage of the data vocabulary
  3. Can handle a nontrivial amount of traffic. It doesn't need to be optimized for it, but it can't fall over in a stiff breeze—analysis should be comparable to analysis of a prod system, just at smaller scale
hrefna,
@hrefna@hachyderm.io avatar

I think in many ways a test suite would be more generally useful, but part of what I personally find challenging is simply determining what it even means to "handle a response."

A reference implementation would solve this.

I know of a few efforts in this regard, but most of them seem to have an iron triangle around the three criteria above:

One or two of the three only. Never all three together.

So far I have developed some heuristics when looking at implementations here.

I've noticed this week that I'm currently seeing no visual indication that the boost button is active. No underline, color, or anything.
It seems that a now-broken userstyle I'm using expects there to be an "active" class applied to the element, but it isn't anymore. Is that intentional?
Figured I should point this out to you in case you don't know already.

Why is kbin so broken?

404's everywhere, "we're working on it" signs everywhere else.

Like sure, not being able to find my response in the pile of thread sounds like Linux problems, but how is this not loading faster and better than reddit?

ono,

My understanding is that it got a big surge of users at a time when it wasn’t really intended for the public, and is now having growing pains.
