I wonder how difficult it would be to have a "read only" version of kbin that replaces the full version when things go wrong or maintenance is being done. I'm sure there are other technical solutions, just one thought.
Interestingly, because of federation, this sort of happens anyway. If you'd hopped onto another kbin instance, or even Lemmy much of the content from magazines here was still accessable.
Afraid not, each instance is independent in that sense so you need to go through the whole account creation again (although you can use the same username again, assuming it's free).
That said, as with this instance, you can browse without needing to be logged in.
Ernest has previously said that this will be an upgrade to address several issues, such as those related to federation, spam and lack of moderation tools.
API stuff is listed in the 'merged pull requests' section (quite a few times), so unless I'm mis-interpreting what that means, I think the API should be going live as long as this downtime is for the updating of the instance!
This will help a LOT with people seeing /kbin as an option ... the mobile webpage is pretty fantastic, but I'm really looking forward to switching to the Artemis App as my daily driver.
I don't recall Ernest explicitly saying so, but the API is live on the artemis.camp instance, so hopefully it's in a state where it can be implemented as part of the core kbin code base. Perhaps the kbin codeberg can shed further light on this question.
API is part of the kbin code base (on latest develop branch). For example https://kbin.melroy.org also have API enabled. But kbin.social is still not upgraded until this day.
Actually, this bug is the reason I started upvoting my own posts in the first place. However, I THINK it's been fixed for some time now though. I can see my posts sorted by hot on the magazine I post to without upvoting them.
Lemmy also has the automatic upvote? That is so interesting to know! Maybe there should be a standard protocol for this behaviour.
Sadly I haven't yet, the same think happens to me, random news videos autoplaying, even when not on screen yet. I'm fairly confident there's no setting to turn off video autoplay on kbin. Sadly even if you tell Firefox to not autoplay videos the videos continue to play, the Firefox mobile settings seem to be limited in that respect though.
I wonder if turning it of on the desktop browser site settings and then syncing will fix it.
Hrmm I think I have automedia preview set to on. I've turned it off and will see if this fixes it. I say think as the UI for the kbin page settings isn't super clear what's on and what's off ..
hey @earnest, original (and multiple since my bad poster here) I just wanted to drop a note here, and wanted to thank you for your response. i couldn't see any replies to my original thread this morning, figured it was users that i had blocked trolling me through some loophole in the blocking/"not really blocking" feature, and reposted a couple times today.
i will stop doing that now that you sent me that message, i'd sure like to see the other replies to this thread (your thread) but can't see a single comment.
take your time, do your thing, i truly utterly and gratefuly appreciate you taking the time out to respond to this, and your efforts, preivous and ongoing are valued and i'm just glad kbin is a workign alternative to lemmy. wish you nothing but good for your family, and other ongoing commitments, and here's to the future of kbin!
You're doing great Ernest, don't be so hard on yourself!
As for funding the project long term, if Patreon/Coffe/LibraPay ever stop being enough, maybe a Wikipedia-like style banner on the top of the page asking for donations could work? I think it's more than fair to remind people to help pay for the upkeep of the free project they use, and if they have a problem with it they can go fork (it) themselves!
Building something this large completely as a volunteer service is commendable, honestly. Most people wouldn't think of taking up something like this.
This place is completely usable for me and bugs have become noticably less frequent. Most features I need are on here. You've done a good job, especially for so much of the work being done by a single person. I can only write a simple script of code, lol. In the future, just consider bringing in some people to help out on Kbin (especially with moderation).
If you need to take a break, delay some updates, or just step back, do so. Your personal matters need to be resolved first, and us random internet strangers can come later. You can stick to the deadline if you'd like, but I think it's more stress you don't need at the moment. It won't kill Kbin if some features took longer to come out.
This month, the largest update is planned. It's taking a long time because part of the team is returning from vacation, hence the delays. I hope that the update will resolve some of the most pressing issues. I'm also trying to remove spam systematically, but currently, the code is my priority. After implementing the new version, I will seriously address the community.
If there's anything urgent, currently contacting through the form is the quickest option. Cheers!
Hi there, I'm currently working on solving the problem. There will be significant changes this month. I know it's taking longer than I initially announced, but this will be a really solid release. The contributors have made an incredible work and I didn't want to miss anything. https://kbin.social/m/kbinMeta/t/381108/Lots-of-new-spam#entry-comment-2209332
As an added bonus, you can also use the https://kbin.social/d/[instance domain here] scheme to block entire domains, if you find that they include content you don't want to see in your feed.
