This article was extremely confusing without the context of what this show is. I thought they were talking about some new Star Trek series with an alternate history.
Tech billionaires: Iâm going to live forever so I have to figure out how to get all the money in the world for myself by taking it away from everyone else. Me, me, me, I, myself, me, I, me, myself, me and not you
The current head of the FTC is bringing the first anti-trust case in many years. Sheâs launched cases against Google, and Amazon so far, and is investigating Facebook. That gives me some hope.
Such a deal would likely attract less regulatory scrutiny than other potential mergers, with WBD lacking any domestic broadcast network, and with mostly synergistic businesses. The biggest source of friction would likely be combining the two legacy film and TV studios.
I come to term with this by reminding myself of how shite it is everywhere these days. Youâll find right wing tendencies all over the world, whether thatâs South East Asia, Africa or America of course.
This doesnât mean I stop fighting for what I believe is right (basically leaving people the fuck alone instead of attacking them for their gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion). It just helps me not constantly re-considering whether Iâve made the right choice by living in Europe.
That said, anyone has an idea of how to not be annoyed by far right dudes describing themselves as trekkies?
Federation is how two different instances are able to communicate within the Fediverse. The current worldwide email system is also based on the idea of federation, but it is not within the Fediverse. Hope that clears it up a bit!
Star Trek has a federation of Humans, Vulcans, and many other races. Their ships are still separate, but they work together.
The Fediverse has a federation of Startrek.Website, Lemmy.World, Sh.itjustwo.rks, etc.
Email has a federation of gmail.com, yahoo.com, microsoft.com, aol.com, every corporate.com, spectrum.net, tons and tons of small servers. This is probably the biggest federation. Many servers will choose to only federate with specific instances, or may explicitly defederate with a list of instances. If I stand up a private, home email on my own domain, thereâs no guarantee that your work will accept my emails.
The film cost them $72 million to make, so this is a $42 million loss. If they actually released the movie they probably would have at least broke even. I have a hard time seeing it not making more than they just wrote off.
Just before Picard had its run, Alex Kurtzman was talking up the idea of having one-shots, movies and limited series focused around established (legacy) characters. He argued that the franchise has matured to the point where this was now possible for the next phase.
The Georgiou S31 movie was supposed to be a show, but with Yeohâs star power, it seems impossible to schedule. So, itâs become the rest case. I hope itâs successful and smooths the way for more.
With Paramount retrenching and Matalas pushing his own Titanprise nepotistic nostalgia tour for an early 25th century show, the window for this seems to have past. Not to mention Paramountâs overall turning away from CBSâ focus on diverse representation.
I think of the originally proposed Section 31 series is a classic case of you snooze, you lose. Too much time was spent hemming and hawing about the series, rather than getting to making it. Resulting in Michelle Yeohâs well earned popularity, and as an effect, lack of availability. I agree that the success of that movie will affect the immediate future of more Star Trek, made for streaming, movies.
Paramountâs treatment of Star Trek is so many mixed messages. One moment it seems to get just how popular Star Trek is and the potential for new stories and characters . Then, it seems timid, re-casting long time characters rather than bringing new faces to the table. Then, it seems surprised by Star Trekâs popularity, that there are still a lot of Star Trek fans. Thatâs just my impressions.
" ⊠Matalas pushing his own Titanprise nepotistic nostalgia tour for an early 25th century show," is such a concise and accurate statement, all I can do is agree with it.
I find myself getting frustrated with Paramount+. Paramount has the money losing Paramount+ and the profitable (although not enough to fully offset Paramount+'s losses) Pluto TV. Yet, they seem to see no way to be profitable with streaming. Iâm also getting frustrated with Pluto TV. With each change (update?) to Pluto TV, the platform is becoming more problematic to use. Freezing, dropping out of an episode or film in the middle of it, and constantly resizing the screen down from full screen. Iâm also not impressed with the recent âsub to Paramount+ and stream Star Trek or else weâll cancel (whichever show)â messaging. I get that doing this is important. I find the wording to be brutish. If my $6 or $12 a month can make or break Star Trek shows, I think the problem is on the corporate side, not with consumers shouldering responsibility.
The Star Trek franchiseâs history has left fans wondering what, if anything, is next before. Iâm going with who knows? out of hope, not expectation. Maybe Iâll be pleasantly surprised.
Someone from my home instance referred me to this post which seems to be the problem Iâm experiencing. The title says âsolvedâ but I canât seem to find a solution in the thread? Images seem to be broken for others on my home instance as well so itâs probably not just my devices.
The only thing Iâve heard of fixing this was something they mentioned on their Mastodon, but it looks like you may have already done that with the adding a rule thing. Adding it here just in case itâs different than what was in the FAQ or for others who may have the same issue and this does fix.

Are you visiting StarTrek.website communities from another instance and having trouble with images loading improperly?
Add this exception to your adblocker (replace âlemmy.worldâ with your instance):
@@||*/pictrs/*$domain=lemmy.world
Hey @xusontha, ol buddy ol pal, what did you do that ended up fixing your issue?
I ended up disabling the whole adblocker to see if that would help, but no⊠If only you knew the lengths I go to to view your memes mr/ms/mx Stamets!
Itâs Mr if pressed but just Stamets is fine. Unless you wanna go all in and call me Commander lol
Iâm doing some Googling myself, just to try to lend a fresh set of eyes, but my god thereâs like no examples of the client side of this issue. Everything I find is Admin level. Damn. Hopefully Xusontha has an answer that can help later.
I solved the cause of the issue (I think), it being caused by my browser caching the images/pict-rs urls weirdly (whenever i would clear the cache or open an incognito/private it would work fine), but I wasnât able to really fix it on the default UI. Not saying it isnât impossible to fix, just that Iâm not smart enough to do it lol (though I have told the sysadmin). If it isnât working on Liftoff too though thatâs strange, since Liftoff seems to work fine for me. The best âsolutionâ for me on desktop seems to be to just using an alternative UI like Photon, since it pulls the image in a different way which makes it load correctly (that and the fact that Photon is just great all around and the dev is cool). For mobile, I would think Liftoff would be working since it seems to work for me, but I donât mainly use Liftoff (Photon FTW), maybe try using a different app and see if you have the same problem?
BTW this is what I see right now on the default UI:
Thanks! Freamon suggested the same problem and the same fix. For me it doesnât solve the issue of the thumbnails not loading, but at least Iâm able to see the images when I click to open them in a new window. I will just switch browsers from Brave to Firefox, because when using Firefox I donât have this issueâŠ
I use Brave on my pc, I disabled the ad blocker on that and the images were still not loading. On my phone I use Liftoff, and usually the images are broken but now that I launch the app to take a screenshot they are all there! Iâll take it, although it makes the problem even weirder :P Out of curiosity I tried Firefox with uBlock origin and without me disabling it only 2 images on the front page of Risa are broken, when I do disable uBlock those last 2 load in as well. When I use Brave browser 95% of the images are broken, even when clicking on them to view in a new tab. It makes no difference if I enable or disable the Brave shields.
The post youâve linked to (referring to the problem being âwacky local cachingâ) explains some of it.
For example, that âTRUST ME. That TV? Itâs Safeâ post - the thumbnail is broke for me on feddit.nl, but it points to a valid image (it expands to a full one, and âOpen Image in New Tabâ will display the thumbnail version.
If, however, I view the community through Private Browsing (aka Incognito Mode), the thumbnail displays correctly.
When I click that same post to open in a new tab, this is what shows up for me. When I try to expand the thumbnail there is also nothing. This is on Brave browser, Brave shields are down.
Oh, well, it might be about the issue that the OP makes in a comment on that post.
For me, the URL of that image is startrek.website/âŠ/ffcc19ac-fb10-4c66-893e-87840bâŠ, which is different from the one in your screenshot.
Viewing feddit.nl/c/risa@startrek.website in Private fixed the thumbnail for me in Normal view, so it suggests itâs a caching issue. Perhaps try to purge your browserâs memory of the community, and see if then comes up with the correct URL.
I tried some different things, and it seems the issue lies with Brave. On Firefox it works, as long as you disable uBlock origin. So I could use a different browser and solve the issue, but I assume thereâs other people using Brave that want to view the images so I hope this gets solved eventually! Edit to add: I only have this issue with communities from startrek.website, the little icons next to community names or usernames are broken as well. I can easily find Risa in my list of subbed communities because the little icon is broken.
Wow, yeah. I just viewed Risa from Brave and itâs a wasteland of broken images.
Hereâs how I fixed it though: Brave=>Clear Browsing Data=>Tick âCached Images and Filesâ=>Click âClear Dataâ. Once I did that, everything loaded normally.
You seem focused on the idea that itâs to do with adblocking or shields, and itâs not - itâs related to caching.
If you expand the images in the spoiler you can see screenshots of me trying your suggesting about the cache. I cleared the browsing history (all of it, not just cached images and files) and it still doesnât work, and tried incognito mode like you did, and it worked a bit because I could at least see the image if I opened it in a new tab. Iâm adding the info about adblocker on/off because thatâs the only âfixâ provided by the admins on Mastodon and in the FAQ. Since thatâs the first thing I tried to disable, itâs obviously not that hence me coming here to ask for help. Iâm trying to be as complete in my info as possible so the person who has to solve it hopefully has the information they need :) and as Iâm not that much of a computer person, I donât know what information is most important to share.
Sorry - I said âyou seem focusedâ, when I should have said something to include the other replies in this thread - I just meant thereâs a lot of stuff here about adblockers, when youâve established for yourself that itâs not that, and itâs drowning out the actual answer.
I did expand your spoiler tag - I read that youâd cleared âBrowsing Historyâ, but thatâs a different checkbox than âCached images and filesâ, so I didnât know if youâd already done that.
Ultimately, this problem is why instances are usually quite âgrabbyâ when it comes to images that federate across - they tend to make a copy and host it themselves. For whatever reason, feddit.nl isnât doing that for images on here, and startrek.website isnât always quick enough to provide it when a page is loaded, so the local cache ends up with a broken image. So clearing the cache and reloading the page will often fix it, but itâs not a 100% solution, and the results will differ by user. I would suggest that the real solution is for startrek.website to upgrade their server, or for its members to host images on a site that is dedicated to serving them.
EDIT: another solution would be to leave feddit.nl, and join startrek.website (depends where you priorities lie, of course)
Ah sorry, I tried to be as complete as possible but I forgot to include a screenshot of what I actually deleted! I cleared browsing history, cookies and other site data, cached images and files, and set the time range to âall timeâ to hopefully nuke everything. It still looks just as messed up sadly⊠I was going to ditch Brave after the adblocking stops working, but Iâll just switch back to Firefox now I think. Iâve noticed Brave has issues with other websites as well, like loading the page but not loading the scrollbar. Your explanation helps me understand the problem a bit better though, thanks!
