/kbin quick March update (kbin.social)

I'm slowly catching up with backlog tasks and cleaning up instances, but there's still quite a bit to do. Day by day, I'm managing to work longer hours, but I still need some time to ramp up the intensity of work. Just wanted to let you know that there might be brief downtimes in instance operation over the weekend. I aim to...

Would it be acceptable in kbin etiquette to add a tag in at least one thread in a magazine I created, and when talking about stuff in other places that touch the same topic, I use the same tag there as well to "promote" the existence of the magazine?

@ernest@kbin.social avatar

@Damaskox The magazine tags work in a way that automatically adds content to it that someone has tagged, for example, on Mastodon. The magazine's name is automatically a tag. I've seen comments on this matter, and I'll be addressing it soon to improve the mechanism and provide a detailed description of its operation in the admin panel. So, for example, all posts tagged on the microblog will be included in the magazine "books," but you can add a tag like in the panel if you want those tags to be included as well.

What are your thoughts on Microblogs vs threads? (kbin.social)

When I first joined Kbin I posted threads due to being a reddit refugee but have started posting microblogs as time went on. I have also noticed some magazines have more threads while others have more microblog posts. For example kbinmeta has more threads while the most active magazine I moderate has mostly microblogs.

To those genuinely interested in moderating (kbin.social)

@Ernest has pushed an update which allows users to request ownership/moderation of abandoned magazines. Ghost/abandoned magazines were fairly prevalent after the initial wave of hype due to users either squatting magazine names or becoming inactive for other reasons. Now is your chance to get involved, if you were waiting to do...

@ernest@kbin.social avatar

Yep, another way is to choose abandoned from the list of magazines, soon it will be more sensibly sorted ;)

We need more / faster moderation (kbin.social)

Ive spent the last week in shock at the lack of moderation because magazines and federated stuff is only moderated by @ernest who I know is busy with development. But the magazines that are on kbin.social and were setup as "Template" magazines are getting trashed either with spam/porn or toxic comments that were reported long...

A bug was filed about this issue four months ago and ernest has commented on that thread, so he's aware of the problem. So far, no solution has been reached, which makes me as a moderator extremely demotivated. I don't want to put effort into building a community if comments that break community rules are federated but moderation is not.

Not sure what's going on with the kbin.social/d/ view of urusai.social, but I was able to find posts (not threads) here:

https://kbin.social/search?q=urusai.social

This led me to @neatchee, who is the instance owner. You might try following them, but I agree, that's an odd bug.

Oddly enough, even users I have already followed do not have their content federated to these magazines at times, even though I have checked their history and seen them use the tags I've assigned to the magazines. I could simply be doing something wrong, but I'm not sure what it is.

Yeah, posting to Kbin from Mastodon instances is a challenge. Kbin filters and tries to assign incoming hashtags to existing magazine hashtags.

If a post contains a hashtag that is taken by another magazine, that magazine usually gets the content instead of yours. Your magazine's hashtag has to appear first in the text. Your Japanese forum is probably catching all of the #japanese posts before they get to LearnJapanese.

Second, it's random which of your magazine hashtags will pull content and from who. The order of the hashtags doesn't appear to affect this.

The only way to ensure a post gets from Mastdon to Kbin or Lemmy is to put @yourmagazine@kbin.social in the post tag. This will make sure it shows up on Lemmy, and will get your post to the Kbin Microblog of the magazine 90% of the time. If you want to be extra sure, do it like this:

@yourmagazinename@kbin.social #yourmagazinename (then any following hashtags)

Hopefully the update will clean this up a bit.

@daredevil @neatchee - Looks like the linked post is what did the trick. I posted here to the Fediverse community to let them know about your instance (it's pointed at your pinned intro post).

As such, this link is now working for daredevil:

https://kbin.social/d/urusai.social

And will allow subscriptions.

@Arotrios @readbeanicecream @daredevil and it answers my question: it is not the full server firehose, just the posts already known to the kbin server

How do we get an instance removed? (kbin.social)

It looks like a new spamming tactic will be to set up your own instance and then just mass spam to other instances from there. Case in point, vive.im I've been noticing spam in one magazine from a user of this. I banned them, but they can still post for some reason. Decided to visit the instance and it looks like some default...

crossmr,

Thanks Ernest. I definitely think if we've blocked a user in a magazine the microblog shouldn't be picking up stuff from them, and we need to be able to turn on automatic hashtag pickup or not.
