Damaskox, to kbinMeta What are badges?
I see a mention of them in magazine options.
vlrny, to random Ok hive mind!
I am looking for sources for watching science documentaries (NOVA, Nature, National Geographic, BBC Earth... And other awesome stuff I probably don't even know about) that isn't via YouTube. I am fed up with their unrelenting greed.
So need suggestions on doc-heavy streaming services, and/or a #peerTube buddy to help me find stuff if it's there, and/or advice on an applebox app that filters out these unrelenting intrusive ads on YouTube. 😤
LilPecan, @vlrny A $60 per year donation will grant you access to PBS Passport. Plenty of documentaries and more, plus it's supporting a good cause.
thezerobit, to random Youtube is full of breathless "science" reporting videos that are full of mostly nonsense, especially when anything remotely related to quantum physics is involved. They give questionable and misleading (if not outright fallacious) descriptions of physics and then uncritically accept the findings and most sensational interpretations of freshly published research papers that haven't been fully vetted or even reproduced by the greater science community.
#science #QuantumPhysics
tschenkel, I'd wager you'll find that's the case with anything you're an expert in.
Some topics (like QM) more so than others, because they have a certain coolness factor for the uninitiated.
For me it's Aerodynamics. So much so that my first year lecture includes an implicit warning in the induction lecture.
There's a massive catch22 with YouTube: (a) there's a lot of good stuff, and a lot of bad stuff. (b) In order to distinguish between the two, you need to be an expert. So what do you do if you want to use YouTube to learn something new and haven't at least got a good background in balony detection?

Squidcopter, to kbinMeta So many magazines that were created by default as a result only have 1 moderator: Ernest.
While this is the case, anyone is free to post whatever the hell they want no matter how unrelated or low quality. This is what has prevented me from coming back daily.
Damaskox, @Squidcopter Can you look for a magazine where folks "behave"? Where they create content that actually follows the magazine's theme?
Yeah it can take resources to find one but if could be rewarding enough for ya to establish beginning conditions for you in here!
MegaMichelle, to random #ActivityPub has a lot of the same characteristics as email. But in email, the duties of each part of the process are split up, and you can mix-and-match software. Fediverse software is more tightly coupled than that.
SMTP is like the ActivityPub server-to-server protocol. Like in email with sendmail/exim/postfix/etc, you could have a program that does just this.
IMAP is like the server-to-client protocol. Like in email, with courier/dovecot/etc, you could have a program that does just this.
MegaMichelle, One thing the fediverse DOES have is multiple client programs. Like with Thunderbird/Roundcube/K-9 Mail, you can use a few different fediverse client apps, or even a couple that run on the web, like what's that one, Elk?
But a bunch of them, the "user-agents" are tied to the backend. Like, you can't use Mastodon's client with a Firefish server. I think it'd be better for the ecosystem if the clients were split from the servers, and the servers were split into S2S and S2C.
SamXavia, to meta I do wonder when #META will actually open up to the rest of the Fediverse. It seems like each day is moving towards that it will never be open to it.
Chais, I don’t. There are enough shitposts as it is. I’m not missing the billions of Facebook idiots.
wjmaggos, to random The problem on a decentralized social network like the #fediverse isn't really Nazis. People who have deep sympathy for the Palestinians can come off as anti-Jewish right now etc. On a system that doesn't force you to see anything, the problem is assholes. People who come at you w/ no care for what you might not like. That's what creates a shitty experience, not people who post crazy/mean shit but don't tag others. And even considerate replies we disagree with will always be hard. #LiberalValues
makeheroism, @wjmaggos how is what you’re describing exclusive to the fedi?
I see shit I don’t like all the time because no one cares what I like.

noellemitchell, to random Every time I try to post or do anything on my @noellem account it gives me an error message. It seems to have issues with loading the home feed, account profiles, and my notifications. I'm considering deleting the account if it lets me do that. 😆 I don't use the account anyway and I now have my @noelleification.wordpress.com@noelleification.wordpress.com profile I can use. 😁
I'm just wondering if I'll be able to delete it with all of the error messages 😅
testing, @noellemitchell
f.s has been in trouble since may 2023 when it still was called calckey.social > problems were so heavy by then that calckey lead dev t1c came up with the idea to rebrand the whole project because the flagship instance's non-performance had started to tarnish the project's reputation > after the transpicuous rebranding, no substantial changes > even atomicpoet moved away from f.s, but without revealing his true motives > f.s is not a flagship, but a shipwreck
reiver, to random There is a fork of Mastodon that has a bunch of features I know many people wish Mastodon had:
• longer posts,
• more poll choices,
• favicon update from web console,
• markdown support,...
I wonder if it is a soft-fork or a hard-fork. I.e., are they still pulling in all the latest Mastodon code.
reiver, to random Be the content you want to see on the Fediverse.
anubis2814, en-us @reiver Two things you need to do to gain a following here, post good stuff and be nice in other words, be excellent to each other and party on
183231bcb, to random What's the status of federation between Lemmy/KBin and Misskey/Sharkey/Firefish/Iceshrimp? I just tried loading several Lemmy and Kbin posts in Sharkey and it doesn't work. I remember having the same issue with Firefish, and I vaguely recall hearing awhile back it was something related to authorized fetch. Have their been any recent developments on that front? #FediQuestions #FediverseQuestions #Threadiverse #Lemmy #KBin #Misskey #Sharkey #Firefish #Iceshrimp
testing, @183231bcb
lemmy posts are not visible on the *keys > regarding kbin: it depends - adding a link on kbin will result in invisibility on the *keys > every other kbin post type (thread, post, photo) should appear on *keys timelines
soweli-mute, to kbinMeta kbin is lowkey kinda complicated lol
there's so many different kinds of posts, microblogging, threads, etc.
lowkey a bit overwhelming.
Teppic, @soweli There is certainly some truth to that, but
- it gets easeir farily quickly; and
- it's worth the effort! Other platforms don't give you the same power and breadth of access across the fediverse.
You'll find you get more interaction from within kbin (and also from Lemmy) if you use 'Threads' rather than 'Posts' (like this). Posts sit in the Microblog and are more aligned to Mastodon way of working - they are harder to see unless people already follow you.
