sin_free_for_00_days, in NASA clears the air: No evidence that UFOs are aliens

This is such a dumb timeline to have to live in.

pgm_01,

Yup. Global Warming is literally burning and flooding people to death, but political leaders and citizens are focussed on UFOs and aliens. Where are the hearings on how the oil industry knew this was happening and covered it up? If you are looking for a conspiracy to hide something huge from the world, that would be a good place to start.

ringwraithfish, in Kim Davis is ordered to pay $100,000 to same-sex couple she denied marriage license

One thing I love about the GOP is to see them constantly abandon their pawns. Kim Davis, Joe the Plumber, Kyle Rittenhouse, etc.... All of these people were mainstage for their 15 minutes of fame and the moment the GOP had wrung them out for all the outrage bait they can generate, they get left in the deep end to fend for themselves.

ImplyingImplications, in Judge delays trial for Trump, others in Georgia 2020 election prosecution

Georgia will likely run into more problems like this. Their RICO case against Trump and his gang of bandits is massive, involving 19 defendants charged with racketeering, 41 predicate offences split across the 19 defendants in order to prove they were involved in racketeering. Not every predicate offence involves every defendant. Most of these predicate offenses involved many more people than the 19 defendants and happened entirely outside of Georgia. Several of the predicate offenses focus on speech and political activities which is going to be incredibly difficult to argue isn’t protected by the first amendment.

This case is massive and messy which means it’ll probably be a very long time until it ends.

RandAlThor, in Judge delays trial for Trump, others in Georgia 2020 election prosecution

This sounds like a win for Trump. 😒

quindraco,

This was always guaranteed to happen once Chesebro and Powell asked for their trials to be speedier.

kirklennon, in "It serves no purpose, it is unjust:" 63 Australian politicians urge US to let WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange walk free

Julian Assange, in addition to being a rapist, is objectively pro-Putin and pro-authoritarian. To be pro-Putin is also to be very anti–free press. He’s absolute garbage and these people are begging for his freedom? I’m so very glad nobody of consequence in the US government has any sympathy for this guy. If he hadn’t spent nearly a decade on the lam, he might already be finished with his US prison sentence, assuming he was convicted. Of course if he hadn’t waited out the statute of limitations, he’d also have to serve his Swedish rape prison sentence. At any rate, nobody should advocate for him except his own lawyers. These Australian politicians are throwing away their own dignity to appeal to the laziest, most insufferably ignorant of their constituents.

Pons_Aelius, in Mads Mikkelsen Dismisses Questions About Lack of Diversity in 'The Promised Land' (Video) - TheWrap

What a nothing burger. A reporter trying to stir up a controversy where none exists.

Pisodeuorrior,

Yeh ffs I hate this kind of prodding by self proclaimed social justice warriors in a context where it has no sense whatsoever. It makes them look stupid, and diminishes the issue in places where it actually is an issue.

Mikklesen response:

"Well, first of all, the film takes place in Denmark in the 1750s. We do have a big plotline about a girl of color who is being subjected to racism, which was very rare, any people of color in Denmark… almost nobody. She was probably at the time the only one in the entire country of Denmark.”"

Diversity shouldn't be a pre-requisite for a story.

It takes place in 2023 New York? Cool, there should be diversity.

It takes place in, say, 1450 Saigon? Diversity would look artificial and out of place.

dingus, in Twinkies are sold! J.M. Smucker scoops up Hostess Brands for $5.6 billion
@dingus@lemmy.ml avatar

Ah yes, just in time to fuck up the recipes even more through cost cutting!

Not to say that the original Twinkie recipe wasn’t just some kind of industrial waste, but you get my drift. These kind of buyouts literally never result in a higher quality product. It’s just one more thing for J.M. Smucker to drive into the ground for profit.

alexyeahdude, in Offices remain half full after latest round of RTO mandates: Taking away hybrid could be a ‘betrayal’

I have yet to see a valid argument about why this is needed

AdmiralShat,

There are.plenty of valid arguments,

  1. Easier to track worker productivity (this is actually wrong, is significantly easier to track productivity done remotely, but management has lost out on traditional visual cues for productivity)
  2. These corporations either own the real-estate, so having them empty greatly reduces the value, or are tied into long term leases they can’t get out of.
  3. Mandating a RTO is also an easier way to offload staff without doing layoffs, as many will just leave.
  4. It’s easier for people in positions of upper management to “build work culture” and “team development”

None of this are valid to you, but I imagine this type of thinking makes sense to management

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

#4 is difficult to quantify, so it's probably the one they feel the strongest about. I also frequently hear from people who prefer working in an office (they exist) that if you need someone, you can just walk over to their desk and ask them for help rather than trying to get a hold of them via IM. In my experience, that person is at lunch or in a conference room somewhere, so you're leaving an IM for them anyway.

SLaSZT, in Medical ethics organization lodges complaint over monkey deaths in Elon Musk’s Neuralink brain chip trials as company is looking for human volunteers to test its implants
@SLaSZT@kbin.social avatar

Regardless of any wrongdoing that occurred during the animal trials, the way that Musk is marketing this and talking about it on X concerns me deeply.

It seems genuinely irresponsible to hype up a medical technology like this when it appears that the animal trials (and the implanted device itself) were not safe and effective.

I really hope the FDA did their due diligence when they cleared the device for human trials. The consequences of not doing so would be devastating for those affected by quadriplegia and ALS and who start experiencing unwanted side effects of implantation or device malfunctions.

balderdash9, in Mastodon makes a major move amid Musk’s multiple messes

The big addition in this edition is a rebuilt search facility. That matters, because it’s something users expect to just work. Mastodon 4.2 has therefore made it possible to search for users using by words in their bio and their names. “The most exciting news is that for the first time, you can now search for posts,” Rochko wrote

That’s the main point of the article. Damn, when did clickbait become so ubiquitous?

End0fLine, in Scientists call for a tree planting drive to help tackle heat waves
@End0fLine@startrek.website avatar

I would like to see more, but, at least in the US, they are getting started on doing this.

Announcement found here

I live in Texas and there are so many small towns that seemed to have forgotten trees exist outside of the trees planted in a private yard. I have only lived in Dallas as far as bigger cities go, but the trees are mostly located in the richer/older neighborhoods. Trees planted next to the curb and cared for by the city are almost non-existent.

I have a particular interest in the heat-island effect so this kind of stuff is always on my radar. This one specifically however I stumbled upon by chance.

As for your friend, I don’t know if it is only a change once I got older, but you will almost never be able to change your friend’s mind. I’ve had conversations along those lines with libertarians many times and there is a distinct lack of logic when discussing government. It’s not worth your time. I may be a bit exhausted by politics after the last eight years.

intensely_human, in US military asks the public for help finding its missing F-35 fighter jet after its pilot had to eject while training over South Carolina

This is strange. It almost makes me think the scenario was an elaborate ruse to capture an F-35:

  • get an inside man to mess with the avionics
  • including turning off location telemetry
  • simulate a failure that requires an ejection
  • fly the plane into the ocean using autopilot
  • recover via submarine
