To add a positive comment, this really will make a difference in cities that have no tree cover. The heat island effect is awful and it has proven to be helped quite a bit by trees. No, it doesn’t fix the climate but it certainly helps urban livers.
Montreal has been "greening" the city for a decade. I'm fortunate enough to be able to walk to work. The last 2 summers I've had to reroute my walk (adding 10 minutes) so I can stay in the greener parts of the city. It's easily 3-5°C cooler on the streets with green areas. When it's 35°C out... it's really noticable. It must have a mental health effects too because it's a god damned joy to walk to work now.
Absolutely. I am fortunate to live in a heavily wooded neighborhood but live within walking distance of one of our entertainment districts that has not prioritized trees in any way. The difference is definitely noticeable. There is almost zero shade and it feels awful during our summers.
wait are you saying there are stores in France who look out for their customers first? i mean this sounds dangerously close to respect for their customers at least..
If you're going to use 12ft.io, you should include that link in the body of the post, and keep the original URL as is. As a user browsing their feed, there's no way to tell - prior to clicking - where the link is going to. Masked links are a security/privacy nightmare without any context that lets the user know "This will load content from Scientific American in your browser".
Yes the pricing is not for locals. Its for tourists that fly in. Lots of people fly in for Disney in Orlando and Miami for beaches or cruises. Now a tourist can hit both cities without flying again or renting a car.
There are a lot more costs to a car besides gas and tolls that add to the cost of that trip. But even besides that, you get to take 3.5 hours of your life back doing things that you can't do while you're driving.
Mastodon is a lot harder to enshittify being as it's decentralised and uses an open protocol.
If it looks like an instance has gone down the path of corporate enshittification, other instances will stop federating with it.
The software itself could be a target, but it's open-source. Even the original instance created by the software creators (mastodon.social), turns to the dark side, someone will inevitably fork the last open-source version of the software and other instances will then update from the most popular fork.
As long as the underlying protocol remains the same, it doesn't really matter what happens.
Heck, kbin is totally different software but uses the same protocol to federate with the various Lemmys, other kbins, and, yes, Mastodon instances too.
Consider what happened a number of times with Reddit where various groups left and used the last open-source version of the software to set up their own Reddit clones. It wasn't particularly successful for them, but one or two of them are still out there.
If there had been a large number of them all sharing content and posts like Mastodon etc., maybe they would have been more popular. (For better or worse).
Well to be fair, it was written by a 13 year old. That includes some things about growing up, so a whole mess of unfiltered thoughts, puberty, masturbation, etc. Some of which was censored by her father (to be fair I doubt she would have wanted all of that stuff actually published).
I don’t know whether or not she would have wanted this stuff to be published nor what her father did, but that’s not the issue here. What Texas is doing here is deeply anti-democratic and authoritarian. That reminds us on China’s or Russia’s dictatorship.
Trump committed crimes because he didn’t like the outcome of democracy. That gives him a LOT in common with all the totalitarian leaders out there and especially the puppet Presidential structure Russia has.
It could be that a lot of folks are on the fence. But yeah I'm generally feeling pretty pessimistic about humanity after watching half my country deny science up to the point they're gasping for air.
