Hmmm, every server I'm getting spam from has a new user in their public directory named yqqwe, and each one of these users is following mastodon_admin_yggwe on a single-user instance mastodon.tinynews.org. One can look at the 924 followers of this admin and they all are named yqqwe and they are all on servers I've been getting #spam from. #fediverse #moderation #administration

@simplenomad@rigor-mortis.nmrc.org avatar

I've found a few of these servers do NOT have the yqqwe account on them, these tend to be more active servers with admins moderating/removing spammers. Good!

@simplenomad TIL that yqqwe is a Mastodon hobo sign for "open sign-ins". I had one that last logged in today. Deleted.

snarfed.org and brid.gy for bridging fediverse folks to Bluesky against their will (and in likely contravention of GDPR in the EU) with typical Silicon Valley techbro sense of entitlement:

“[O]pt in results in far fewer users, and users are critical for a bridge to be useful.”¹

Hi #fediverse friends, can I ask for another recommendation?

Meeting headsets, what are we using nowadays??

graves501,
@graves501@fosstodon.org avatar

@Gina
I usually avoid headsets and would rather have my regular headphones (e.g. in-ears for me) combined with whatever mic I have at my disposal since I have a couple of them. Headset mics are usually crap, a 5 euro clip-on mic will probably sound better than most (gaming) headset mics.

Just thought I'd share this because we don't all have to own crappy/uncomfortable headsets with crappy mics :)

HarkMahlberg,
@HarkMahlberg@kbin.social avatar

@Gina Depending on your budget and how portable you need it to be, you could look at some entry-level streaming/podcasting mics and couple it with whichever headphones feel most comfortable to you. The two below both come with their own stands while taking up minimal desk-space.

So the results from yesterday's poll made it clear: people on the #fediverse do not want to try #Bluesky! 😆

82% of people said they will not be using Bluesky now that it's open to the public for registration. I have to say I approve of this high percentage. 😄

Att Fediverse

The flagship instance of Fire Fish is now OFFLINE.

The significance of this event is many of the Fire Fish Developers have previously come forward claiming the lead developer vanished. Unfortunately, the lead developer treated their project as a centralized project, meaning that they were the sole person making decisions, giving no access to accounts or code changes or even donations, despite having a team behind them.

@tetra This sucks, but security vulnerabilities can happen to literally any project. Coincidentally, Mastodon also just released a fix for a critical security vulnerability.

They disclosed the vulnerability and released both a workaround and a fix for it nearly immediately after it was reported, which I think says a lot more about the trustworthiness of the project than the fact that a vulnerability existed.

It's not about the fact that there was a vulnerability, it's the fact that it was caused by evaluating JSON

I recently had a chat with someone on kbin, or lemmy who pointed out to me that Mastodon posts go all over the Fedirverse.

I'd love to see more interpolarabilty among social networks.

You can look up your own profile, or someone you follow, on kbin/lemmy and see the posts presented differently... in magazine format etc.

Try it. No need to sign up tp look around.

First-ever transmitted Alzheimer’s cases reported in new study

"As children, they had received growth hormone taken from the brains of human cadavers, which used to be a treatment for a number of conditions that caused short stature. Now, decades later, they were showing signs of Alzheimer’s."

Fediverse Question 🎶👀:

I'm not a fan of YouTube,
and certainly not of Google (as you might have noticed...), but one thing I'm addicted to YouTube for is instrumental long playlists of music to work.
I. Need. It :blobcatheadphones:🎵

Since I'm always looking for new ways to deGooglelify my life:

Do you know of any PeerTube equivalent for this?
Are there any instrumental long playlists/mixes for work on any PeerTube instances?
Or maybe another Fediverse platform would be preferable for this?

It’s funny to me that some people on Threads are saying Mastodon (mistakenly thinking it’s a one service) will always be ”small” and ”closed”. Well, soon we’ll be in the same crowd with the Threads people, perhaps with others like Tumblr too.

The Fediverse can expand unlike the other truly closed social networks. This is exactly like talking about the Internet in the 80s, ”it will be a small thing for the nerds, and always will be so”.

Is decentralised federated social media over engineered?

Can't get this brain fart out of my head.

What would the simplest, FOSS, alternative look like and would it be worth it?

Quick thoughts:

  • FOSS platforms intended to be big single servers, but dedicated to ...
  • Shared/Single Sign On
  • Easy cross posting
  • Enabling and building universal Multi-platform clients.
  • Unlike email, supporting small servers

No duplication/federation/protocol required, just software.

The private key doesn't need to be memorized, it stays saved on the device that the client software is on, allowing the user to integrate mobile device's biometric reader (fingerprint/face/iris/whatever) to confirm identity, or use security key, there are already different ways to implement it that doesn't require pw memorization.

I've got a long unmemorizable string for Firefox sync, Brave, Proton Mail/Pass, it's still more secure than pw memorized

Aatube,
@Aatube@kbin.social avatar

@Sean Not all devices support passkeys.

Unmemorizable passwords are not the kind I like to use. I'd rather be able to login on some random incognito guest computer.
