What is the story behind the profile picture you are currently using here on the #Fediverse today?

The other day I asked for everyone to share their story of the username(s) that they use, and you can see that thread here:

Let's hear why you've chosen the image you've chosen!

@feditips

Suppose someone blocks me. The feeling is mutual, so I want to block them too.

Am I able to block them after they've blocked me?

This is what I call mutual blocking.

Is mutual blocking in the fediverse possible at all?

Is mutual blocking possible on Mastodon?

I don't see these two questions as equal. It could be possible to mutually block at the level of ActivityPub, but also for Mastodon to not have an interface that allows us doing it.

I know on some platform this is not possible. Once you block someone, you vanish out of existence, and they cannot also block you.

However, I'm thinking that it is possible to mutually block one another in the fediverse and Mastodon.

I've searched the web and I haven't found a discussion of this.

@yourautisticlife

As far as I know, there's no direct way to do this in vanilla Mastodon as the menu which includes the block option becomes inaccessible when they block you.

It might be possible on ActivityPub, but not on vanilla Mastodon.

@feditips

Thanks.

I've not tried it, but I expect that if you can get the username, you could put it in a CSV file and import and merge that file into your block list.

That's a workaround, however.

So I activated #ActivityPub on infullflow.net, but the user profile I created cannot be found when I search for it on Mastodon. Not sure what the problem is. Now what?

WTF?

Oh, I just said “Hello” to you in italics.

(That’s similar to what someone who uses a screen reader hears when you use fancy non-alphabetical Unicode characters to simulate italics or boldface on your fediverse posts. So please don’t do that.)

If you are on a smaller instance, are you able to see follows and followers of people on other instances? Is this an instance setting or something else? #Fediverse #FediAsk

ContentConsumer9999,

@DrVeronikaCH As a Kbin user I can only see local follows and can't see followers at all.

Question for you multi-social media sites people: what is your favorite and why? Mine is definitely the #Fediverse and my #Mastodon account, it is by far the richest experience on social media. #Twitter feels awkwardly half-dead, half-alive, while #Bluesky is mostly an American wasteland.

chris,
@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca avatar

@jynersolives no longer have Twitter and never signed up for BS. But I get far more diverse engagement here, with nearly the same number of followers as I had on Twitter. And this is with just two or three other people in my local area who have come over. There is no doubt in my mind that if Mastodon/Fedi had the same uptake locally as Twitter, I would probably have to start filtering 😆

@jynersolives my answer to an earlier version of this:
(For context I was on twitter for about 3 years, on Mastodon for 1, haven’t tried bluesky or threads)

Dear #Fediverse I remember there being some screenshots comparing the data collected by #Facebook, #Instagram, :birdsite: and the official #Mastodon iOS apps somewhere, but I cannot for the life of me find them.

Hjalp? Anyone can point me their way?

@mobilizon is there a way a group can vote on a event date? like when you try to find a fitting date for all/most members? #fediverse #mobilizon

feditips, to random
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

The Fediverse has an event organisation platform called @mobilizon, find out more at:

➡️ https://joinmobilizon.org

#Mobilizon servers let you create event pages where people can sign up, even without an account.

Mobilizon accounts can be followed from Mastodon etc, and followers will see your latest events appear in their home feed.

It's made by non-profit @Framasoft, who also make @peertube and provide all kinds of nice free open source online services.

I wonder if the ActivityPub spec has some allowance for the eliding of the "user" part of a handle. So instead of "@/me@myserver.social" it could just be "@/myserver.social" (without "/").

If not I think that would be a nice add. Maybe just some convention like "If user not present in handle, assume "@/_main@myserver.social".
