Every now and then, technologists are able to translate their strongly held beliefs into action for the benefit of society. Sometimes these actions result in new features, apps or platforms but it's especially powerful when this happens at the protocol level.

In the latest episode of Dot Social I talk with @evan about how he helped get #ActivityPub started, how it's going, and what he hopes for next. Check it out here.

A new episode of Dot Social, the first podcast about the open social web, is out! In it, Flipboard CEO @mike chats with ActivityPub co-author @evan about what the protocol unlocks for builders and entrepreneurs, how open-source social networks change our relationships to content and each other, and why any of this matters at all. @ernest
Is there currently a way to see threads boosted by followed users as a user? If not, is that something you're planning to add eventually?

ernest,
@ernest@kbin.social avatar

@Pamasich Currently, there is no such view, but I plan to personalize the feed /sub more with a brief description of why I see a particular post and the ability to filter, for example followings boosts. But that will be after the completion of work, at least partially, on federation.

z428, to random

or maybe more general crowd: Given some communication over here recently, I wonder whether it's possible to compose posts that are visible to followers only but for which each of my follower is able to see each response and able to interact with each other person responding there no matter whether these people follow each other too?

hoergen,

@z428 look, if you want all the contacts just to be able to answer each other or see each others answers, you have to tell every server and other user who is allowed and should see the answer of every other participant.

So you have to technically group and share this "virtual group with all participants" to everybody else in the group. Otherwise nobody knows who to send replies, except to you.

Even this might be possible in other protocols, you have to trust every other involved node, that it respects your intention to privacy and keep the closed list that you set initially.

z428,

@hoergen Hmmm, maybe I'm all off here, but ... this somehow feels like a problem that has been solved in the past, and be that as simple as in e-mail: Sending messages to a wide load of recipients with all of them in Cc (because I want to discuss issues with all of them), anyone who responds to any of these messages will send this response to all of the original recipients, and that is intentionally and expected to be this way. If someone modifies the set of recipients - fine, of course everyone's able and allowed to do that, that's a conscious decision, but it's not, like "no matter what - your response will only be seen by those people in that recipient list that have you in their address book"... . Maybe this analogy is a bit difficult, but at least that's a kind of behaviour that, for an addressing as generic as "Following", would somehow be not all too much off.

Do you need help with using Mastodon and the Fediverse? Especially if you're a beginner or unsure about techy things?

You can ask by messaging me or replying to this thread, and I'll try to help or find someone else who can help. Don't worry if a question seems silly or basic!

You can also look things up on the guide at https://fedi.tips, which has an "essentials" section at the top and a complete list of answered questions below that.

I'm thinking I might stop using the term or when I want to talk about this community of federated social media services.

It's confusing and to be honest sounds way too much like a corporate brand trying to sell something.

I'm thinking I might start using something like "open internet" in general and "open social media" in particular to make the point that fedi isn't some specific thing; it's the default social media for the open internet.

Am I wrong?

doctormo,
@doctormo@floss.social avatar

@phiofx

I admit that it might be a bit of a "lies to children" (Pratchett et al), but it might be the first steps to carefully lead people away and towards a place where that brighter and wider future is visible.

I am using another term #Peopleverse, but not with intent for that to be a real name. More a vision for an online landscape that seamlessly aligns with our offline world and is in support of our daily lives.

I noticed the #artemis app for Kbin no longer works and after some digging it seems like the developer burned out

It's unfortunate to see, and is a reminder that we can't take the #fediverse and our developers for granted!

@dansup sad to hear. One of the reasons we decided to ask people to subscribe for Murmel upfront. While we are all for freedom of the web, it’s unrealistic to expect that anything running on a single person or a small-team’s voluntary effort will survive over the long-term. Life happens.

Since video hosting requires so many more resources than image hosting, I have these questions about #PeerTube :

  1. What are the hosting costs of PeerTube instances?
  2. How do these instances deal with financing themselves?
  3. As I understand it, if a Fediverse user views content from a different instance, then this content will be downloaded to their own instance. Is this understanding correct?
  4. If so, is this also true for PeerTube videos - which means that, say, a Mastodon user following a PeerTube account will cause a lot of additional load (and thus hosting costs) for their home instance?

I haven't followed the discussion in all details... but isn't the whole point of the that people can curate their own experiences rather than having their own timeline be determined by corporate algorithms?

And obviously, different users with different backgrounds have different perspectives and needs. Obviously, people - who represent a much smaller percentage of users of Mastodon than it is the case with, say, Twitter - have different perspective on what they need for curating block lists.

Thus, I think the concept behind TheBadSpace is sound. And if it doesn't work out in practice, then I hope that other BIPOC Mastodon users come up with their own systems.

But "one size fits all" lists for defederation are not and will never be sufficient. We desperately need different perspectives if we are to grow, and hopefully supplant corporate social media.

And supplanting corporate social media should be the goal, since they are all riling people up against each other for the sake of "engagement". We are already seeing where this leads.
