This is like complaining that the little mom and pop sandwich shop can’t product sandwiches as fast and uniformly as Subway. This clearly isn’t for you, just go to Reddit or something if you want stability. I love the little slices of janky internet we get from activitypub, im sick of everything needing to become highly available around the globe supporting millions of requests per second with no downtime tolerance.
It doesn’t NEED to be anything, this is run by Ernest, for free. It’s worse than that, he is paying for it and not being subsidized with ad revenue. He can totally ask for help if he wants, he can also say no to that and continue running the site on his own. You are not entitled to this, good grief.
That’s about where I am, honestly. I’m starting to look for alternatives.
I can deal with the site having the occasional problem, but I can’t deal with absolutely no communication at all when things break down. Kbin has gotten too big to be a one-person operation.
This is now the fourth post I’ve seen about people starting to get fed up, and honestly, you know people are starting to hit their limits once people start making posts about their frustrations. I bet a lot of folks have just quietly given up or moved to lemmy or mbin because they’ve gotten frustrated with all the issues.
I’m a pretty patient person and can put up with a lot of goofiness on a site, as long as there’s some kind of communication happening. But there’s none.
I was at that point last week and ended up biting the bullet and migrating my subscriptions over to this account. Really wish there was a first class account migration tool available though.
@stopthatgirl7 Same. I poked around beehaw a bit, but I am not sure its is good fit for me. Think I will check out lemmy.world, they seem to be really communicative on mastodon during their upgrade process.
But that's all I know about it. I am looking into mbin,too...but I really don't much about it.
I have been spending most of my social media time on mastodon lately.
I bet a lot of folks have just quietly given up or moved to lemmy or mbin because they’ve gotten frustrated with all the issues.
I guess it's not quiet once I post this, but I submitted the account deletion request a couple weeks back and spent some time setting my feedly back up after 1 too many spam posts. I'm already getting my scrolling fix from rss feeds again, and this is the first time I've been on kbin in a week.
It doesn't help that whenever this comes up there's a contingent of users who jump to Ernest's "defense" by calling the folks raising these issues "concern trolls" and accusing them of shilling for mbin.
No, this is simply a matter of what is actually working well. The point of federation is that one shouldn't need to have "loyalty" to any particular instance or any particular platform. Use whichever one's working.
Thats not what you describe. Troll is used the way you did in my response to you. A reference to other people trolling in some other threads. Not accusations of the main post being a troll. At least that is the way im reading it. I guess I just assume your first comment was refering to more blatant type posts or replies.
I bet a lot of folks have just quietly given up or moved to lemmy or mbin because they’ve gotten frustrated with all the issues.
I made an alt two months ago when Kbin would never connect. I have barely been back since, so it is now my main. I hoped Kbin would come out if its slump but... that seems unlikely at this point. I'm actually quite happy on Lemmy, especially after the v0.19 upgrade allows blocking of an entire instance. I personally virtually never see any spam (maybe one comment per month) and while connection issues do occur, they are like a handful per week rather than handful per hour (it varies a lot though, sometimes it does get bad for a day or two and then weeks go by without a hitch).
I avoided the initial hurdle of making a Lemmy account for so long and, while it was super annoying, in retrospect it wasn't that bad, compared to all the other problems here and still having to go through all that, eventually.
If anyone is thinking about switching: don't worry unduly about it, just make an account and see if you like it, but you can always keep your Kbin active too, assuming Kbin remains alive.
Also, you may need to try out a few places before you find one that fits you best. But that reduces your anxiety bc you know more and don't need to worry about having to do it again in a worst-case scenario.
Considering his last post was about going to the hospital for a few days, over a month ago, I suspect he's not okay.
Regardless, I just cancelled my $5/mo donation towards the development of the kbin software. Seeing as how there hasn't been any development in over a month.
If Ernest is listening, I'd love to volunteer to help be a sysadmin/coordinate sysadmin schedules. I've got like 20 years of tech experience, with a lot of it being handling support teams and administering Linux systems. I know I said I couldn't because of money, I realized that social currency is worth even more and I like you folks and want this place to succeed.
So if anybody can get in touch with him, have Ernest email 246FHD@protonmail.com
Will this also migrate my blocked lists (instances, magazines, and users)?
If not, does anyone know of a similar tool that will?
I've been trying out other kbin/mbin instances since the recent issues with kbin.social's lack of federation, hoping to open an alt there for backup, but having to manually recreate my block lists isn't something I'm really wanting to do..
Ok, thanks. And thanks for making the tool in the first place!
I think for me, at least at the moment the frustration with kbin.social is still less than that of having to start over on a new instance, so I'll wait it out for now, and hopefully migration tools will continue evolving so it becomes less and less of a hassle as time goes on (I would gladly contribute if I had any relevant knowhow myself, unfortunately that's not the case).
Maybe it's time for Kbin and Mbin to be a single project, in the end they are the same thing, just that Mbin has more people actively working on it, so they are faster with pull requests. There is no big philosophical problem, just a maintenance one.
Are you sure that's not just because mbin was syncing changes from kbin? https://github.com/MbinOrg/mbin/pull/231 seems to be the only commit ernest has actually made to mbin directly
@FfaerieOxide me too. I like it, I love the platform, I don't have an issue with the outages, and I like the way Ernest understands the fediverse.
If there's an outage fine, I just go to another fediverse account til kbin.social comes back. We all have other things in our life, sometimes projects have to take a back seat.
Also I have a lot of sympathy for Ernest wanting to retain control. It's his vision, let's let him do it his way.
Edit: the spam seems to be on mags that have Ernest as sole mod, so that might be an easy fix.
@FfaerieOxide yes! Well not officially, but after Arotrios had been gone a long time I applied to mod it, mainly as a sort of caretaker/safe pair of hands so that Arotrios will definitely get it back if he returns.
I don't know why/where Arotrios went. I kind of thought he'd be back by now.
I made an mbin account to jump to whenever kbin stops functioning, which has been more frequent than I had expected. Each time I end up subscribing to more and more magazines over there to reach parity with my kbin account. Mbin hasn’t been enough of a carrot on its own to make me want to switch completely, but it’s always been working fine and even slightly easier to navigate. I’ve just got this lurking hunch that kbin will eventually end up like Artemis, the way it feels ignored at times.
I am a big fan of kbin but I am posting this from an mbin instance
And good luck to your instance. I wouldn't feel as comfortable uploading anything to US servers myself, and I didn't find any words similar to the following (from your instance) on kbin.social:
We may use the information that you provide to us, and any other information of yours that is associated with, or related to, the Web Site, including but not limited to your IP address, email address, content of posts, content of private messages, and use of the Web Site, for our internal business and we may disclose the information to law enforcement personnel, governmental agencies, legal counsel and/or third parties at any time and for any purpose.
I'm not saying anything negative about kbin, and I still have and use a kbin account. I'm just saying that it's hard to post anything from an error page.
I appreciate the info though, I am experimenting with different instances so that's good to know.
Heaven forbid but the hosting bills are paid up through now at minimum.
You got to think if he were (again, forbid) dead or something the site wouldn't refresh and we wouldn't see ads for drugs and pirated MMA streams.
The fact that we’re sitting here theorizing where Ernest is like he’s Kate Middleton is why this can’t be a one-man operation anymore. It’s too much for one person to begin with, and when people have no idea what’s going on, they’ll start going wild with theories as to what’s going on.
The fact we're here talking on kbin.social when for all we know Ernest is talking to aliens right now on some Jodie Foster Contact shit shows how rather robust this place actually is when you think about it.
The site errored out repeatedly when I tried to like a comment
Has there ever been a time kbin.social didn't do that from time to time? 503 is a friend of mine at this point. Neither one of us has abandoned this place for twitter so this place is clearly at least robust enough (code- and community- wise) for us still to be having this conversation here.
Heck, I could (though won't and don't yet) argue the errors are a feature to keep you getting hooked on scrolling. There's at least 2 projects I have finished I wouldn't have worked on if this place hadn't been down at the time.
Has there ever been a time kbin.social didn't do that from time to time?
You understand that’s not a selling point, correct?
Hilariously, I got an error message trying to load the notification for your comment.
And as I’ve said before, I can put up with wonkiness. But I can’t put up with no communication and not knowing what all is wrong or how long things are going to be messy. I like kbin, but I do not like wondering if social is going to go belly up with no warning and no idea when it’ll get fixed when it did start erroring out for days and no way to find out what’s even going on.
The export process says it has copied subscriptions to the clipboard, but when I paste I just get the code I had pasted in to the browser console. I'm using Safari on macOS.
It's not a big deal. I don't mind starting from scratch.
I have made some modifications that should prompt you to click a button to copy the contents to the clipboard, rather than doing it automatically. This is done because Safari only permits modifying the clipboard if there was direct user interaction. Can you try again?
PugJesus isn't perhaps as left as some would wish but closer to decent than to douche. The way you describe PJ one'd think you were describing an AnotherAttorney or other fascist douche.
I'm not super active on kbin, but I've never seen anything from Pug to suggest they're a bad person. On the contrary, they're probably one of my favorite posters on here, at least in terms of the content they bring. I also respect anyone here who actually posts content and engages in conversations. It's more than most (myself included!) can say.
Really just the big ones. Lemmy, Mastodon, and Misskey. In my humble opinion, judging by the software alone, Misskey > Mastodon, kbin > Lemmy. Judging by the culture is a lot harder because it depends on the instance.
We haven't heard from our developer/lead maintainer/near entirety of the staff for about a month, so it's kind of hard to say. If they are working on something in the backend, it doesn't feel like they care enough to inform the community about it.
I'm a big fan of Kbin but the project is a total mess right now and kbin.social is always down or only partially working. And there's next to no communication about what's happening.
I don't wanna do it but it might be time to pull up stakes and figure something else out.
I really like kbin, but honestly, with as unstable as it is and how little information is coming out about what’s going on (seriously, there needs to at least be a Mastodon account we can check for updates or information when kbin social is down), I’m seriously considering making a lemmy account and moving over. It’s frustrating, because I do really prefer kbin, but this is beyond frustrating.
With how much you post, I'd imagine it'd be a problem for you. Posting something only for it to show up on their new feeds 3 hours later with zero votes will likely result in your stuff not being seen. Also makes it hard for @PugJesus modding.
I don’t actually mind stuff not getting seen, it’s more not knowing if the site is going to error out when I try to look at it or check replies. Trying to access the site, or trying to upvote things, and getting error messages that are less than useful gets old fast.
If you haven't been following, there's a chance that Beehaw will defederate from everyone and go solo in the future. So, you may want to create a test account somewhere else.
I just set up an account at fedia.io, which is an mbin instance. When I ran the script posted over here to copy my subscriptions I had 111 subscriptions succeed and 49 fail. I've been checking the ones that failed and they've all been ones that haven't had anyone post in them for 5 months or more, so I'm guessing those are "dead" anyway. Seems not too bad, I'll see how it goes I guess.
I posted this same response from both of my accounts, I'm going to watch to see how well it federates back and forth.
Yeah the comments are not federating across fedia/kbin. I'm only seeing your comments on this thread when you've posted them on the server I am currently viewing. Even 8 hours after you commented.
Oof. This definitely needs to get sorted out asap. It would be the death of a federated platform centered around discussion. It's kinda one of the main tasks.
