Ps. these are Let's Encrypt certificates. Something isn't correctly configured on the server. Failing to renew this media.kbin.social domain. I do not have the correct credentials to help out here, but I do know certbot program should NORMALLY auto-renew these TLS certificates. To avoid this issue in the first place from happening.
I maybe have to login again once a week or so, presumably because something's been changed on the backend. Using Firefox here. I log on multiple times daily on my phone.
Sadly I haven't yet, the same think happens to me, random news videos autoplaying, even when not on screen yet. I'm fairly confident there's no setting to turn off video autoplay on kbin. Sadly even if you tell Firefox to not autoplay videos the videos continue to play, the Firefox mobile settings seem to be limited in that respect though.
I wonder if turning it of on the desktop browser site settings and then syncing will fix it.
Hrmm I think I have automedia preview set to on. I've turned it off and will see if this fixes it. I say think as the UI for the kbin page settings isn't super clear what's on and what's off ..
I haven't been able to post using Kbin for a bit due to a bug, but I can answer the reverse - posts on Lemmy generally show up on Kbin within a minute.
If you've got domains blocked, that might be causing the error. Domain blocking seems to gum up posting and comment visibility. Removing my domain blocks cleared up the issues I was having about a month ago.
Odd that comments are working for you. During my previous issues I did note that there were posting differences when I used the "Add Link", "Comment" and "Post" functionality (which worked) versus the "Add Thread" and "Add Picture" options (which didn't, or worked partially after throwing an initial 500 error). Given that you can still comment, you may have some posting access with the other options.
'Add picture' is the one that's denied to me, I can still post links. But I mostly post pictures and I hate going through the hassle of uploading to a third party site first, so I just use my Lemmy.world or DBZ alts for now. Been going on for two weeks or so, figure it might get cleared up after Kbin's upcoming update.
Ahh gotcha. The add Pics function never worked very well for me, so I haven't used it in a bit (mainly rely on Links and Threads). I've also noticed that kbin pictures only occasionally make it through Federation (seems to happen on other kbin instances as well) - seems really random whether or not they appear on the federating instance.
Notification issue I ran across today - a person can delete a message in a thread leaving "deleted by author" but the message still shows up in notifications (or part of it since notifications cuts them off at some point).
he’s eventually going to make sure abandoned instances have admins
I think he meant magazines on kbin.social in this context. I don't think he has any way to control another instance and change who runs it, besides a kindly worded letter.
I do try to keep track of kbin instances and how up to date they are and their admins, but I can't really advertise in their place. One thing I've kind of been thinking about is it'd be nice if nodeinfo had information next to current user count of like: desired user count, max user count. Otherwise you have no idea what an instance admin is hoping for, whether it's just their personal instance or they're willing to support tens of thousands of users. Without that I don't want to send people to x instance and suddenly the admin being in for a surprise. But I just looked up nodeinfo and it looks like there's plenty of worms in that can about it being too complex already, so maybe I'll avoid opening my mouth about it... for now.
It’s very annoying. All the spam is originating from kbin, too.
It’s not even “can easily be overlooked and move on” type spam either, it’s things like “hey kid, wanna buy some oxy?” Kbin admins don’t seem to be doing shit about it because these spammers keep coming back with new accounts, and I have yet to see a post removed from the kbin side of things.
It’s getting to the point that I hope my instance defederates from kbin because it’s just full of trash.
There’s a bug going on that prevents Kbin moderation from replicating over the fediverse - what happens is they will nuke the threads but it will not reflect across the rest of the federation which is a huge bug. A lot of instances are either blocking their communities en masse to avoid defederating, or just flat out defederating.
Are you sure it’s a bug? To me, it sounds like just how it works. This is one reason beehaw is considering leaving the fediverse (and to be honest, I’d be thankful if we did, based on my recent experiences)
Yeah the more I learn about the tech and design around these systems the more I question the philosophy and logic of the whole setup.
The massive vulnerabilities from cached and redistributed (federated) CSAM content, the inability to operate at scale due to various attacks from malicious actors, the lack of moderation tools to deal with the aforementioned issues. It’s just a pile of problems that other systems have literally already solved.
We should go back to forums. This format is overrated, we’re only clinging to it because we’ve been addicted to reddit for a decade and we can’t fathom going back to something as regressive as forums, even if they are logically the better solution for a majority of instances.
it's not trolling or spam, it's just me being a fucking idiot. my apologies. i had two domains blocked, and in doing so, triggered a bug which kbin users sometimes run into, that being specifically not seeing comments if they have any domains blocked, i had two, i deleted the blocks on the domains, and presto, like magic i can see comments. no spam, just stupidity, mine.
You are crushing it, in my view, @ernest. Thank you for all you do for this community, but you can give yourself some room to breathe. We're all doing okay as long as you're okay.
I mean I’m sure there are tonnes of improvement to be made, but I still use /kbin on my phone and it seems fine to me? I see plenty of people on fedi from kbin instances, too.
