If not, I recommend bringing it up there. If you only bring it up here, you rely on ernest or another contributor writing it down and remembering it, which probably isn't too reliable. Better to put it on the issue tracker.
Ps. these are Let's Encrypt certificates. Something isn't correctly configured on the server. Failing to renew this media.kbin.social domain. I do not have the correct credentials to help out here, but I do know certbot program should NORMALLY auto-renew these TLS certificates. To avoid this issue in the first place from happening.
From what I've heard another big issue is that moderation actions don't get federated to lemmy anyway. Beehaw was considering (or did it already) blocking Kbin domains because for example, posts deleted by moderators here don't get deleted on the lemmy instance. So even if you do moderate it's not applied to federated instances 🙁
This post has no comments visible for me (though it should have 9 as of now). I do not see it in the kbinMeta at all. I also sometimes get 500 errors in kbinMeta, particularly when sorting by new. I only found this post by clicking on Ernest's name to see activity. Any ideas (though I'm not sure if I will see any responses, heh). Not seeing anything but 200s in the network tab of inspector.
A bug was filed about this issuefour months ago and ernest has commented on that thread, so he's aware of the problem. So far, no solution has been reached, which makes me as a moderator extremely demotivated. I don't want to put effort into building a community if comments that break community rules are federated but moderation is not.
Thanks for this info, I guess it's good to know it's on the to do list, but I completely agree, since realising this my motivation to post, knowing my moderation doesn't have any effect on a large chunk of users, has dropped significantly..
Is there a place to check for updates on this, is the post you shared it?
As soon as the site came back up I was looking for any of the changes, so I'm glad you posted. Stinks to have an unplanned outage but I'm looking forward to the planned one! I hope it goes well!
Honestly im so worried about kbin at this point, it feels like when you kinle a bit of fire an then try to make it bigger, while worrying to extinguish the little bit you have. Hope it does grow...
I'm honestly tempted to spin up my own instance as it is. Mostly to tinker with the software, but the fact that I can and relatively easy is pretty neat.
I wonder how difficult it would be to have a "read only" version of kbin that replaces the full version when things go wrong or maintenance is being done. I'm sure there are other technical solutions, just one thought.
Interestingly, because of federation, this sort of happens anyway. If you'd hopped onto another kbin instance, or even Lemmy much of the content from magazines here was still accessable.
Afraid not, each instance is independent in that sense so you need to go through the whole account creation again (although you can use the same username again, assuming it's free).
That said, as with this instance, you can browse without needing to be logged in.
