Hell I've had magazine deletion requests sitting around for months, since before ernest disappeared lol.

I run @SquaredCircle here and with all this never-ending breaking I've been spending the last 3 days testing out Federation between 4-5 other lemmy and mbin instances trying to find a place to move my account and the community as a whole.

can a magazine be permanently deleted? i don't want to attempt to mod when post deletion/moderation is not federated (kbin.social)

i don't want spam or posts against the rules to be showing up on other sites like lemmy because the deletion on kbin isn't federated, it feels irresponsible to me and will make the community look bad. can i delete a magazine?

Magazines can be deleted. There is a Delete Magazine button in the Magazine Panel of any magazine you own (on the General tab, first one).

However at this time it does not appear to be an automatic thing (I believe Ernest has to clear then manually). I've deleted around a dozen so far (which were taken care of within 24h) and have had over a dozen more as well waiting for deletion (which have been sitting there for a month+ as Ernest has been busy as of late, and then the holidays and such).

The main issues with the improper functioning of the instance have been resolved, but it led to additional complications. Currently, using the instance should be quite comfortable, but I will continue to work intensively on a comprehensive solution for the next few days. I don't quite understand what you mean. The problem is that in such a case, it's challenging to provide a specific estimate. That's why I occasionally provide updates in case the work is prolonged. It seems to me that this is how it works. Issues arose without any interference in the code or infrastructure. I addressed hardware problems, but it turned out that wasn't the only issue. Throughout this entire period, I've been attempting to ensure that the instance operates as smoothly as possible. It should be significantly better now, but I'm still actively working on it. Unfortunately, taking a holiday break here doesn't help either.

Hey, I will get back to this thread and the comments at the beginning of next week. I am able to quickly address some of the issues you mentioned in your post. Changes will undoubtedly be implemented gradually, but for now, the redesign of the ActivityPub module takes higher priority. Once that is completed, the development of the frontend part of the platfrom will truly pick up pace.

Additionally, the suspension of other work was a conscious decision on my part. I believe that the code at this stage needs to be deeply refactored, and that's exactly what I am doing. Solid foundations are the only option for the project to survive and grow in the long term, and to be properly scalable. Adding more blocks to what I have always considered a prototype (which forks do) makes no sense to me.

seeing "span" and other tags instead of the actual code block

If you're using Firefox or Kiwi, the Kbin Enhancement Suite userscript now has a fix for this. There's also a standalone version here.

Well, for the span tags, I haven't seen other tags being an issue. If you see a code block where the same issue occurs with other tags, tell me so I can update it.

If there is another Reddit exodus, for example, or if we get a surge due to the Threads thing, I feel like many will just turn back due to the UI alone.

I don't know if ernest's views changed since the last exodus, but iirc people joining the platform wasn't really his intention, it just happened. Kbin hasn't even had a proper full release yet, it's still beta software, so I don't think people bouncing off is that big an issue yet.

With the abandonment of Artemis (formerly kmoon), kbin is now only really usable by the mobile site.

That's the case for now, but app development is still happening with other projects:

  • ernest has mentioned intentions to revive his kbin app project
  • Lemmy's Lunar (ios) app is adding kbin support
  • @jwr1 introduced their Interstellar app prototype for Android recently.

@Ernest has pushed an update which allows users to request ownership/moderation of abandoned magazines. Ghost/abandoned magazines were fairly prevalent after the initial wave of hype due to users either squatting magazine names or becoming inactive for other reasons. Now is your chance to get involved, if you were waiting to do...

I think it's great that you're interested in this! It may be scary, but it can also be pretty exciting. I would say to start small. There might be a lot of things to consider: establishing rules, the overall vibe of the , your audience, the type of content you want to see, etc. Pick on one, focus on that for a day or so. If you plan on making new magazine, you'll be free to take your time with this. Growing niche magazines tends to be on the slow side. IMO, that's better for those who are new to this, so they can have time to acclimate to the tools and considerations you'll be presented with. It may also allow you to really reflect on the direction you'd like to take your magazine.

As tend to start slow, people will be hesitant to post content. Unfortunately, when content is rare, people are less inclined to post. This is a problem that reinforces itself, as others are unlikely to post when there is no content. You'll probably need to be "the first on the dance floor", so to speak, if your goal is to grow your magazine. This will likely test your patience, as you will probably be one of, if not the only active posters in your magazine. Picking a magazine name that might see usage in the and might prove useful for content via the section. However, if you wish to pick a more unique name, more power to you. Something to consider, is that you may wish to create a sibling magazine that can accept a tag that would federate posts with regularity.

For example, I run @learnjapanese. However, most people will be unlikely to write on Mastodon. However, I also run @japanese, which federates the tag from Mastodon instances. You can add additional tags in the magazine settings menu, which allows the federation of posts that contain other hashtags. I've pinned a microblog in both magazines' sections to point to each other to increase and awareness of related resources. Speaking of discoverability, Ernest recently implemented a feature to /kbin that further increases discoverability and accessibility. Posting the same link/image to related magazines will allow users to see other magazines this content is posted to. This appears in the comments section of the thread, directly below the content of the post itself. Ideally, this would generate additional traffic and increase visibility for the smaller, but related magazines. This has been an extremely welcome addition, as someone who is moderating smaller magazines and trying to bring awareness without spamming advertisements.

1 part 'Meta users 'already have' an account so getting into it is easy', mixed with 1 part 'The slightest possibility of inconvenience (like having to choose a Mastodon server) acts as a deterrent to most people when alternative means are available'.

I've already discussed some of the reasons on Matrix, but today, I'll try to briefly explain what's going on here. Due to the increasing popularity of kbin, infrastructure changes, the cost of maintaining instances, and development-related priorities, I wasn't able to deliver the milestones on time, which are crucial for project funding (even though I'm really close to achieving that). I wasn't prepared for this and didn't anticipate such a delay in terms of the savings I allocated for all of this. The servers are still being maintained with the donations that came through buymycoffe, but there are additional costs like living expenses and other obligations. So, I had to take up temporary work to ensure the continued development of the project.

This year has also brought many other unexpected personal problems, as I mentioned earlier. Now, another one has been added to that list – I had to end my marriage and a fifteen-year-long relationship. While it's not a sudden decision, it's never easy, but it has turned out to be more challenging than I anticipated. Not just for me, and this time, I want to dedicate as much time as necessary to conclude the matter properly. I had to learn how to do many things from scratch, set up a new work environment, establish daily routines, and more.

So, why all these deadlines and promises?
It was probably the only way for me to accomplish at least the absolute minimum. There's a lot of my own code waiting for review on my local branches, but it's genuinely hard for me to push myself to it for now. The infrastructure also requires fine-tuning, and Piotr is helping me with that. And the days are passing by very quickly.

However, I'm almost ready to continue on this journey, so you can expect that in the near future, there will be a banner with information and the update date of the instance and release. After that, we will work on avoiding such longer development downtimes in case of my absence.

Regarding the funding, do you think you can set up an alternative way of donating that accepts other payment options like PayPal? Personally I'm not using a credit card, which is the only payment option one can use on your buymeacoffee.

API stuff is listed in the 'merged pull requests' section (quite a few times), so unless I'm mis-interpreting what that means, I think the API should be going live as long as this downtime is for the updating of the instance!

This will help a LOT with people seeing /kbin as an option ... the mobile webpage is pretty fantastic, but I'm really looking forward to switching to the Artemis App as my daily driver.
