I appreciate that earnest made a post yesterday, or maybe it was the day before, saying that he is not dead and hasn't given up on kbin. It's not on this magazine, so I'm not sure where it was since this seems to be the most appropriate one, but in any case....
Looks like Kbin is running a pretty huge federation backlog, as it's taking several hours for comments to federate out. I'm not knowledgeable about how these servers work, but is it teetering on collapsing or something?
The export process says it has copied subscriptions to the clipboard, but when I paste I just get the code I had pasted in to the browser console. I'm using Safari on macOS.
It's not a big deal. I don't mind starting from scratch.
kbin.social is being overrun with spammers. Can we disable registrations on this instance so they can't keep creating new accounts? Every day I log on, I have to spend the first 20-30 minutes, reporting and blocking a bunch of new accounts....
I spend more time blocking spammers than anything else. I’m sure it will improve once this issue gets more attention, but for now I think I’ll take a break from this site.
With decentralized content and federated services growing in popularity, many existing web technologies are adopting the ActivityPub open standard. Services like Meta’s Threads, Tumblr, Medium, Flipboard, Mozilla, and WordPress.com have all added or announced support of ActivityPub, allowing for their content to be accessible...
Just because it's not tailored to your personal preferences doesn't make it "shit". For anyone who doesn't want to manage code, Wordpress is worth considering.
Personally, I'd like to maintain Wordpress locally and offline. Then each update exported to the server as a static site. I just haven't found a thorough enough tutorial online yet.
The Fediverse is currently divided over whether or not to block Threads. Here are some of the things people are worried about, some opportunities that might come from it, and what we need to do to prepare.
If a Mastodon instance was run by someone who allowed a genocide to be fuelled by their platform, and earn money from the advertising, I think we'd defederate in a heart beat. It just doesn't seem consistent to federate with them.
I’m not having a conversation that compares people signing up to their favourite social media channel with people who suffer systemic discrimination every day in their lives.
With Meta beginning to test federation, there's a lot of discussion as to whether we should preemptively defederate with Threads. I made a post about the question, and it seems that opinions differ a lot among people on Kbin. There were a lot of arguments for and against regarding ads, privacy, and content quality, but I don't...
I’m glad you said that you don’t think that privacy is the biggest issue. Our posts are already public and can be scraped easily. I’ve stopped reading posts about privacy issues because they seem misinformed to me.
I don’t know what to think about the rest at this stage, but I’m beyond suspicious of Meta, which has proven itself to be a deeply unethical company.
When I'm on Firefox, I can attach an image to a "Photo" post, but the upload button doesn't do anything. On Safari, I can't even attach the image in the first place....
Will it be possible at some point to have private magazines? (kbin.social)
Just wondering if local communities could use kbin that way.
Ernest needs to quickly delegate or this instance will quickly die (kbin.social)

Is it possible to collapse comments under Kbin posts? I can’t seem to do it, at least on mobile. (kbin.social)
I’m sure I’ve seen comments indicating that people can do this.
