Candelestine, in You can be the one to create the kbin page on wikipedia

There wasn’t a lot of good source material to use a couple months ago. I’m unsure if that has changed, but it might’ve. It’s a prerequisite for writing a good wikipedia article, at any rate, as opposed to a shitty one.

You’re not allowed to write your own telling of the story on there, you have to copy other people’s and cite them. So a lot of other people need to have written on it, from a position of being a reliable source, before a quality wikipedia article can be written.

Though a small, mediocre article can be better than no article, if you’re giving someone a good framework to improve on later, as more sources develop.

JackbyDev,

There’s been a lot of articles about the recent Reddit drama or whatever you want to call it. I’m sure some of them have mentioned Lemmy and Kbin!

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@kbin.social avatar

And also bear in mind that if someone writes a crappy enough kbin article now and it gets deleted, that's going to make it harder to get a kbin article started again in the future. I know that's not how it's supposed to work in principle but unfortunately it's how it works in practice.

0x1C3B00DA,
@0x1C3B00DA@kbin.social avatar

Pleroma still doesn't have a wikipedia article because of this, despite being one of the oldest AP-enabled fediverse services. It's been deleted twice because some moderator didn't like the quality or number of sources.

density,
@density@kbin.social avatar

@FaceDeer oh that's interesting. do you know why?

magic_lobster_party,

Wikipedia doesn’t like articles that are basically ads. Articles should be written from an unbiased standpoint using independent sources. If an article has been removed because it’s basically self promotion, then mods will be more careful about reopening it again.

Erikatharsis, in A relatively easy way to disable the "random posts" or "random threads" sections (desktop web browser) + suggestions for sidebar
@Erikatharsis@kbin.social avatar

Forgive me for boosting my own thread; I just want to make sure this tutorial is visible on "hot", since this is a potential fix to a problem a lot of people are having.

kindenough,
@kindenough@kbin.social avatar

Thnx, this was bothering me for quite a while.

blivet, in /kbin Issues
@blivet@kbin.social avatar

The past couple of days I’m constantly being signed out. I have to login several times a day, practically every time I visit.

This seems to happen much more frequently on the mobile version of the site, and whatever Artemis is using to scrape data.

jpgr,

This happens to me on desktop as well. Today I can't even log in using my username, have to use email instead.

djidane535,
@djidane535@kbin.social avatar

Same issue for me since yesterday. I don’t know what has changed, but it’s very frequent (tens a day I would say).

one2k,

Yes. I`ve been seeing it as well in the last 2-3 days on Firefox on mobile. Being logged out 2-3 times a day.

In fact I just had to login to post this comment.

HarkMahlberg,
@HarkMahlberg@kbin.social avatar

This seems to have been fixed in the last couple days? I used to have this problem but it seems to have been reduced or mitigated.

MyTurtleSwimsUpsideDown,

It’s been this way for a while for me. I had to re-login just to post this comment…

I’m also getting an “invalid CSRF” token occasionally when I login. And error pages when I try to upvote.

I’m using the web app on iOS.

Shopro, in /kbin Issues

There might be something wrong with Markdown tables, they worked fine a week or so ago but now it's just the "raw code". Any experiencing this issue or did the format change slightly?

eatmoregreenfood, in /kbin Issues
@eatmoregreenfood@kbin.social avatar

Two things: imgur.com images do not open when I click the preview button. Thing two, we still really need a reply box at the top of threads not bottom. Posted from Galaxy s22 using Samsung Internet browser.

GeekFTW,
@GeekFTW@kbin.social avatar

The imgur problem looks like it's fixed, sometime in the last 2-3h it started working again for me.

curiosityLynx, in /kbin Issues

Tried to add my alt account on a different instance to the moderator list of the only magazine I own and got a nonsensical error message: Value isn't blank, but the error message says "This value should not be blank"

ernest,
@ernest@kbin.social avatar

Try @curiosityLynx@kglitch.social
I will add the issue, thanks.

curiosityLynx,

That worked, thanks.

Alexmitter, in Is Kbin defederated from Lemmy.ml?
@Alexmitter@kbin.social avatar

Lemmy.ml blocks any kbin instance on purpose by blocking the kbinBot User-Agent

Lodespawn, in /kbin Issues

Not sure if anyone is getting this problem or whether it is a KBin issue or a browser issue.

I get an issue when browsing on mobile (Firefox) and loading magazine headers under all. If I scroll down and load a few additional magazine headers, click on a magazine title to view it and then hit back to return to the list of magazines, the list does not return me to the place I was at in the list.

Instead it truncates the list back to first loaded magazine headers and leaves me viewing the random details normally positioned at the bottom of the all list. To get it to load more magazine headers I have to scroll back to actual bottom of the listed of initially loaded magazine headers. It then starts reloading headers as normal but I then need to scroll and reload all subsequent magazine headers to get back to my position in the list.

speck,

Yup, experiencing this too

Tomassci, in Ernest Appreciation Post
@Tomassci@kbin.social avatar

I'm going to mention the fact that not only ernest made the platform, and runs it, he also made communities of miscellanous subreddits (which helped me as reddit refugee) and posts content into it. And manages to do all of that at the same time. Really grateful for all of that.

Hypx, in /kbin Issues
@Hypx@kbin.social avatar

Is anyone else still seeing federated posts even when you turn the federation status to off? I was trying to hide some of the excess meme posts that are coming from other servers. But turning off federation does not make all of them go away. Some federated posts are still being shown.

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

Turning off federation doesn't mean it will delete all the content on your/the instance.

0xtero, in YSK that Kbin can subscribe not only to magazines and communities, but entire instances.

As an added bonus, you can also use the https://kbin.social/d/[instance domain here] scheme to block entire domains, if you find that they include content you don't want to see in your feed.

Arotrios,
@Arotrios@kbin.social avatar

Dammit, that's awesome, didn't even see the block button - you got me bonus hunting now... :)

Bonus #2 - Turns out the /d/ parameter works for ANY domains with content posted on Kbin or in your feed.

For instance, let's say you wanna see (or block) everything posted from Facebook:

https://kbin.social/d/facebook.com

or Twitter:

https://kbin.social/d/twitter.com

I gotta hand it to Ernest - this platform has got some kickass code under the hood.

Pons_Aelius, in Call out post for a particular karma farmer on kbin.social

All three (make that 4) downvotes are from accounts younger than this post.

StopMassDownvotingYouIdiot,

Yup bahahah, I already expected that. Those are rookie numbers - this person is on another level and there are a LOT more to come. I'd love to see how long they waste their life on this.

minnieo,
@minnieo@kbin.social avatar

How many damn emails does this person have? Lmfao

Pons_Aelius,

If you spend a few bucks to register a domain name?

A number only limited to your self-control (and self-respect) to rig votes that give you nothing IRL.

So, for this person, I am guessing hundreds.

CoWizard,

To say it gives you nothing IRL is ignorant of the online social engineering these platforms can do

Pons_Aelius,

Ignorant?

This whole thread is an example of people who are very aware of what is possible with social engineering online and calling it out on a new platform in an attempt to at least slow the influx.

The person who is creating accounts like the energiser bunny hitting the skins is trying to use reddit tactics that have been well known since that crow vs corvid user was found boosting their content.

The difference here is that, since votes are public, their attempts are very transparent.

0xtero,

No need to spend money on domains. Gmail allows for endless aliases. Just one Gmail account is enough.

PabloDiscobar,
@PabloDiscobar@kbin.social avatar

Nice trick since you can hardly ban gmail as an admin.

Pamasich,
@Pamasich@kbin.social avatar

You can't ban gmail, but it shouldn't be too hard to add countermeasures against it.

quantum_hampster,

This is already being looked into. Kbin doesn’t have to form validation in place yet, but it’s on the list to prevent spammers.
Essentially it will prevent emails with plus signs and periods in them

lowdownfool,
@lowdownfool@kbin.social avatar

plus signs and periods in them

That would be a mistake, those are valid characters for an email address.

quantum_hampster,

You’re correct. I misstated.
Plus signs however are by and large used for aliases.

That being said, the elephant in the room isn’t Gmail or mail aliases.

eltimablo,

You don't even need to do that. There are email providers that will allow you to make an unlimited number of email aliases that all point back to the same address. Fastmail is one that comes to mind, but I'm sure there are others.

Pamasich,
@Pamasich@kbin.social avatar

No need, gmail gives you virtually infinite emails. Just tested it out, kbin doesn't have countermeasures against it in place. You can use one gmail email to create as many accounts as you want.

StopMassDownvotingYouIdiot,
lowdownfool,
@lowdownfool@kbin.social avatar

Funny, I noticed latvianbloke downvoting an article on the Philly shooting where kids got hurt.

Rabbithole, in What I think kbin needs to do to survive, and why I think it has a better chance than any other Reddit alternative I've seen yet.

The truth is most internet communities which found and advertise themselves as an alternative to Reddit die.

To be honest, there were damn good reasons why Voat, etc, died in a massive fire. The Reddit exoduses in question were from huge chunks of the userbase effectively being kicked out for being massive bastards/racists/bigots, etc. The communities that they spawned after leaving were absolutely horrific and nobody else on the internet wanted to go anywhere near them.

The current exodus is made up of actually normal people (at least, normal enough), and the reason we're here isn't just because we're all joined by hatred (weeeelllll... maybe a hatred of u/Spez in a lot of cases, ha!), but because we're genuinely looking for a better forum-space than what's been available recently until now.

Sure, there are similarities, we're still here because we find corporate control over the forum-space to be "oppressive" (just what an incel/racist would say, right?), but it's not because our views aren't tolerated there, it's just because we're really fucking tired of the cost of having somewhere to actually discuss things is that we're endlessly sold as a product, followed by our discussion area being destroyed by corporate greed. Over and over again.

The reasons why this place is getting busy is fundamentally different than the reason why the previous migrations created places like Voat or Parler, etc. We're already in a massively better position due to that alone.

Eventually, we need to get to the place where we’re creating unique meme formats

I agree with what you're saying in general, but I really hope that all of the interesting discussion here doesn't eventually get buried by memes like back on Reddit. Memes can be fun and all, but sorting a lot of otherwise really great niche-subs by top of all time back there was often a case of finding nothing of value at all because there were 50 pages of fucking memes at the top of the list. Personal preference, of course.
