So I’m more some bystander, running Lemmy myself, and having serious issues about your handling of the open source licence attribution thing.
But that said, personally I’d prefer not having you set a deadline like that. Especially early stage projects, imo, need focused leadership. Maybe you need to delegate even more, including stepping back a bit and maybe paying someone else part time, but you should still keep control. You created a wonderful alternative to Lemmy, with a very thoughtfully designed Interface. That is not a sign you already need to step back just because things started moving faster than expected.
I'm not sure if this is a good suggestion, are you able to delete it via moderation as you're the magazine owner? Someone mentioned having issues deleting their own posts but still could via moderation recently, but I'm not actually sure what that difference means as I haven't moderated any magazines myself.
Ok, so trying to post THIS op I got that same error, refreshed and tried again and again the error but on my profile it showed as posted twice but somehow I had no problem deleting THAT duplicate so why can't I delete those on my own magazine? Strange
Hmm, so far that is only showing the microblog posts that are tethered to the magazines I sub, but I also don't really follow many people yet so maybe they have just been drowned out.
Interesting, I've heard people say the same before. I do always sort by newest myself, but I sub to a bunch of magazines and also, say, three mastodon accounts, and that page is basically just solely the mastodon posts, very rarely do I see microblog posts in lemmy/kbin. I guess a filter of magazines vs users would be useful
Edit: Also, is the default view all time for you? I could see that causing a problem as well if it's hot / all time. I mainly have three bookmarks: /hot/12h, /sub/newest/24h, /sub/microblog/newest/1d. Getting all results for all of time by default seemed a bit weird to me, especially for microblog posts
The default view appears to be hot, but changing to new does not do much (is there an actual difference between sorting new/x and new/y? Specifying a time frame for new sorting seems kinda pointless).
I think the issue here is probably that I'm subbed to a magazine that has set up a fairly common hashtag (#opensource) for its microblog, so it naturally pulls in a lot.
Definitely, you're right that new timeframe doesn't matter, I meant to type hot all time xD I would expect that to potentially grab like whatever was boosted most in the past but then again the algorithm does tend to show newer things even under hot.
Yea the tag system might need a bit of work. It works great for some magazines, but for others not so much. For example m/help is supposed to be a magazine for kbin help but it pulls in everything under #help which can be anything in the fediverse. I did see someone suggest a way for a magazine to remove it defaulting to using the tag of its name, which doesn't seem like a bad idea to me
In hindsight I remember why I filter newest to a timespan, so wanted to make note of it. Right now: https://fedia.io/m/kbinMeta@kbin.social/microblog/newest 500s for me but https://fedia.io/m/kbinMeta@kbin.social/microblog/newest/1w is able to load. so cutting off some of the older posts helps me run into less 500 issues, and I generally don't care too much about old posts unless I'm searching for something. that might be a fedia specific thing though, not sure how 500s are on other instances
It's become impossible to browse by new thanks to an army of spam bots.
Every time I sort by new, there are several new groups of 3-5 new users posting to "random" all at once (so 12-15 spam posts for every 5-10 legit posts), I haven't risked the click, but it's a lot of promises of nudes or gold, or celebrity names, you know, bait.
I'll block and report one post from each user as spam, but that seems pointless when there's a seemingly endless stream of them popping up.
I can't see pinned posts at the moment. It seems like I can see them if I log out. I can't seem to find a setting that would cause this that I could have changed to cause it.
I've already sent him a PM about that user & magazine a while ago. Still waiting and hoping to hear / see something.
Edit: I also think this is kinda disappointing. Kbin immediately defederated from nsfwlemmy over some bullshit allegations that weren't even true. Meanwhile this and other examples of toxicity remain to fester directly on this instance.
Any time I tried to get someone to check out Reddit, I hated having to preface it with, oh and you're going to want to block these 30 subs, they're horrible, and here's another 100 that are kinda gross, I'll email you my list......
There's stuff to block, but there's stuff that should be banned too. I remember recommending some of the SQL reddits to coworkers just weeks before the jailbait crap hit the national news. It's up to ernest how he wants to run this place, but I hope we don't let the bar go too low.
@ernest - just a heads up that I'm experiencing the same bug - notifications from blocked accounts. Wouldn't normally be an issue, but we've got a couple of trolls that like to go back to old threads and keep replying to try and bait a response.
And eventually, there will be issues with harassment, because that’s just how idiots on the internet are. This is something that needs to be fixed before it becomes an actual problem, I reckon.

All the things you mentioned are in the roadmap. However, we can either do it quickly and potentially encounter issues in a few weeks or months, or take a bit more time for a more thorough approach. I don't think closing threads is a great idea or in keeping with how this all works. I think it'd be nice to be able to mute a thread as an individual, but by its nature these discussions are open and shared with many instances. If we close it on kbin.social, other kbin instances, lemmy instances, and even places like mastodon and pixelfed could keep discussing, if I understand activity pub correctly.
In such important tasks, I would like to engage in community-driven development. When I start planning these tasks, I will come to you with my whiteboard and sketch out the individual stages. Together, we will look for the advantages and disadvantages of such a solution, the weak and strong points. This is to jointly make a decision on whether the change makes sense on kbin.social but also in the perspective of the entire federation. It can be a great fun ;)

Yes, it’s a difficult thing to enforce a subjective line of a basic standard of decency, but it’s also what a society is and one of the main reasons we gather as people. The quality of a group is shown in how they accommodate the weakest and most vulnerable among them.
If we aren’t prioritizing a way to send this CHUD and people liked them to the hypothetical edge of town, to be sure they can’t bombard the young person struggling with their gender identity with targeted hate at their weakest moment, then what are we doing here?
Could you clarify what you would do in cases like this? Censor based on misinterpretation of the clickbait headline, even if it does not contain hate content at all?

I joined kbin recently and I'm kind of concerned about the implications of this. I don't support those posts at all, but who gets to say what's worth banning and what not? Wouldn't that go against the decentralized nature of the site? Or is it the specific instance that magazine is on that has the authority to ban what's inside? How does all of this work?

kbin.social administration controls only what is published on kbin.social, and what content from elsewhere kbin.social users can see. An user banned from kbin.social can make another account, on another site and start recreate there his banned community. kbin.social will be able to ban this remote user and remote community, but this restricts only what kbin.social users can see.
Exactly the same for another /kbin or lemmy site - just replace the domain name accordingly.
While I kind of agree with you in being concerned about who gets to control what we see and don't see and the censorship aspect, there is also "the paradox of tolerance" to be considered and maybe in that light it is correct to not tolerate that subs intolerance.

No, it's exactly the opposite. The entire point of a decentralized federation is that while yes, the admin is in complete control of what content is allowed on his or her own instance, users who don't like what the admin is doing can just spin up their own new instances.
Ernest can ban this type of content if he likes. Others can take the kbin software and make a new instance where it's welcome. Ernest can choose not to federate with that instance if they continue to push content that's against his rules, but Ernest doesn't have the power to dictate the direction for hundreds of millions of users' experience like a certain centralized site's mad CEO or admin board does.
What would be against the nature of ActivityPub is if Ernest built something into the software to prevent it being used for types of content he doesn't like, even on other instances.

I have been wondering how instance-wide moderation will end up looking on kbin, once you've had a chance to get a team in place for that. While it is (I assume) a "generalist" instance, it's important to keep in mind that you can't please everyone. Trying to have too broad of an audience will just result in retaining those with a high tolerance for toxicity (usually highly toxic themselves), while everyone else leaves in favor of better-managed spaces.
Communities in general, and particularly on the internet, need to understand what their purpose is, and be proactive about filtering out those that are incompatible with that purpose. This doesn't mean judging those people as wrong, or "bad people", it just means recognizing that not everyone is going to get along, and that some level of group cohesion needs to be maintained.
Agreed, that's part of my problem with generalist instances. They're so broad that they serve multiple communities with differing expectations, and it forces admins to take sides.
I think there is value in having both generalist and specialized instances, and the big landing spots for new users should probably strive to be more generalist. As you point out though, there are limits to how broad of an audience one can practically cater to.
I can help: say for example, you want to block lemmygrad.ml - go to kbin.social/d/lemmygrad.ml (d for "domain") and from there you can block the whole instance (click on the 🚫).
It's the biggest lie that there is "server upgrade and service will be recovered in couple of days" or something like that. Unless it is constant server upgrade.
