Well I'll tell ya that I am a big fan of kbin but I am posting this from an mbin instance because this has been going on for a looooong time now.

Hope for the best while you prepare for the worst.

And good luck to your instance. I wouldn't feel as comfortable uploading anything to US servers myself, and I didn't find any words similar to the following (from your instance) on kbin.social:

We may use the information that you provide to us, and any other information of yours that is associated with, or related to, the Web Site, including but not limited to your IP address, email address, content of posts, content of private messages, and use of the Web Site, for our internal business and we may disclose the information to law enforcement personnel, governmental agencies, legal counsel and/or third parties at any time and for any purpose.

EmptyRadar,

I'm not saying anything negative about kbin, and I still have and use a kbin account. I'm just saying that it's hard to post anything from an error page.

I appreciate the info though, I am experimenting with different instances so that's good to know.

One day is annoying, but bearable. much longer and I won't have a choice but switch. I like kbin, but the mbin team says some things that I find concerning about kbin - I wish the two could patch up their differences.

FfaerieOxide,
@FfaerieOxide@kbin.social avatar

I couldn't find any decent k/m bin instances when I was looking during the most recent outage.

olorin99,

I'm curious what counts as a decent instance for you?

FfaerieOxide,
@FfaerieOxide@kbin.social avatar

I'm curious what counts as a decent instance for you?

Open signups, non-US servers, GDPR-compliant, file uploads, local magazines among other attributes.

Also if you visit an instance and it appears that whoever runs it never even conceived you might not be viewing it from a phone, that's a turn off.

wagesj45,
@wagesj45@kbin.social avatar

the mbin team says some things that I find concerning about kbin

What are they saying?

bluGill,

kbin doesn't accept contributions. It is a one person project despit appearing to be community driven.

I don't know what is true but that is a concerning accusation.

Pamasich,
@Pamasich@kbin.social avatar

The project definitely accepts contributions, the mbin devs have contributed to kbin before and a few weeks ago a minor code change was committed and merged by someone other than ernest.

As I understand it, the issue is that people with merge permissions other than ernest are only allowed to merge their own pull requests, not those of third parties, which require a review from ernest.
(At least that's what I've seen explained before, though I haven't seen any proof of it so I don't fully know if it's real.)

This means a majority of contributors can't get their pull requests merged when ernest is gone. Which is why they went and made mbin when he was gone for months last time.

I like Kbin too. I also like Lemmy. They are both good if you ask me.

FfaerieOxide,
@FfaerieOxide@kbin.social avatar

I also like Lemmy.

Lemmy hasn't grabbed me yet like kbin has. Is mastodon as integrated with lemmy as it is with kbin?

Apparently you can't say fag on lemmy.world which could cause some problems with some of the magazines I mod here. Also I'm left with negative feelings from lemmy.world not federating images and posts I reply to .world threads from .social.

-mygrad is right out because I do not believe making common cause with the allies of people who want my friends dead is "...of a progressive character".

.ml has similar issues to the above two

blajah.zone I have no issue with but I just don't want that to be my home instance. I actually have been trying to break their monopoly on 196 for a while now

Beehaw is fine but they're always talking about defederating so that basket seems unfit to slip my eggs into.

exploding heads is a shit instance for fascists

sh.itjust.works—and this is no slight toward or reflection on present company—seems like that place for people who complain about "censorship" and "echo chambers" when they get asked to leave a dunkin doughnuts for sig heiling on the counter while making a hitler 'stache out of a cruller. Again not you, I am sure you are lovely, but when someone complains they can't be transphobic and their account is more than 3 weeks old, odds are good "@sh.itjust.works" is trailing their handle.

i donate financially to kbin, and i dont use it other than as a remote, federating platform. the outage means nothing to me personally.

still would be nice to get a little administrative communication on a system designed for.. ya know, communication.

BiggestBulb, in Request for an off-site status communication method and more admins to help run the site & communicate with users
@BiggestBulb@kbin.run avatar

Honestly, I really fear for both kbin and mbin. I was really hoping for more substantial changes in both by this time, but honestly it's just staying largely the same.

Raffster, in Request for an off-site status communication method and more admins to help run the site & communicate with users

Yes please. I like kbin a lot and fear that this is the only option there is, given the size of the project.

Essence_of_Meh, in Any way to export and import subscriptions?

There's one tool for Lemmy but I never found anything similar for kBin unfortunately. Automatic account migration is also stuck as a planned feature for Mbin at the moment.

I'm afraid you'll have to do it by hand.

originalucifer, in So blimey - what happened there?
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

its not the outage that bothers me, its the complete lack of communication.

stopthatgirl7,
@stopthatgirl7@kbin.social avatar

Exactly this. There’s no way to know what’s going on when kbin goes down. It would be nice if there was a kbin Mastodon account or something people could check for information when the site is down.

Suspiciousbrowsing, in So blimey - what happened there?

I ended up finding another fork Mbin, but I'll be fucked if I know how to sign up to it.

This time, another official /kbin server, in Polish (karab.in) was working during all the kbin.social's sleep.

I will repost my comment from https://kbin.social/m/fediverse@lemmy.world/t/838165/What-s-going-on-with-kbin-social

This time is probably unrelated to @ernest's supposed inactivity. Actually, his another /kbin server, https://karab.in has been brought back on 15 of February.

Why not kbin.social? Well, this server is co-administered by FTdL (Technology for People Foundation) (https://kbin.social/m/kbinMeta/t/177112).

Entire FTdL infrastructure was down from 16 o'clock in Cracow to this morning.

HeartyBeast,

Thank you. That makes sense

HarkMahlberg,
@HarkMahlberg@kbin.social avatar

Oh wow, what a day for the fediverse huh? Kbin's infrastructure went down, Lemmy.ml's certs expired (or so Firefox told me), and a ton of Misskey servers got hacked and started botspamming everyone.

Pat, in So… what's going on?

At this point, the best thing would just to move to an instance using mbin, a fork created by many devs who contributed to and wanted to improve kbin but were upset at lack of progress. With Ernest's many absences all the improvements weren't being merged. Many instances using the name kbin, such as the one I'm on, have switched to mbin long ago and have many of the features and fixes that have been requested and long waited for.

bridge_too_close, in So… what's going on?
@bridge_too_close@kbin.social avatar

I understand the desire to keep kbin a solo project in order to maintain control over it, but if this is going to see any success in the long term, then there needs to be a team. I like kbin over lemmy for the interface and mocroblog integration, but the spam and lack of updates are taking its toll. At the very least, there needs to be another admin or two to look after things whenever Ernest isn't around.

BarbecueCowboy, in So… what's going on?

I think a lot of us have had the same thoughts looking around kbin.

We all appreciate the work Ernest has done, but we really need someone to dedicate some time to picking out a team to help him, but it seems like that's not happening for whatever reason. I know there's a few other people in the codeberg, but I believe there was a falling out there. What we really need in addition to that though is just generic admins.

ProdigalFrog,
@ProdigalFrog@kbin.social avatar

Ernest said in a previous post with some Mbin drama that he's very, very slow to trust people, and that's why he's been slow to give anyone else admin access to the project.

That may have been okay when only a few hundred people were using Kbin, but the project far outgrew what a single person can manage, especially since he's not only the main developer of the backend and frontend of Kbin, but also the only admin, moderator of multiple communities, AND decided to tackle making a Mobile Kbin app since that other one became vaporware. That is WAY too much for a single person to handle and still have any sort of existence offline.

This has been brought to his attention, but as you mentioned, nothing changes, and he continues the cycle of putting incredible load on himself, and then burning out. It's not sustainable, and unfortunately his lack of trust in others, and an unhealthy level of self-reliance, will ultimately keep Kbin from thriving.

QualifiedKitten, in Can registrations on kbin.social be disabled to stop spammers

Are you guys browsing by new? Do you moderate active communities? I'm just curious to understand why we seem to have such different experiences since I only encounter spam once or twice per week, but I definitely spend way too many hours scrolling.

HeartyBeast,

Yes, I quite often browse by new

rimu, in Can registrations on kbin.social be disabled to stop spammers

It's hard to imagine Kbin coming back from being abandoned by it's only developer, admin and moderator. Twice.

Is it time to move on?

Other Kbin instances - https://fedidb.org/software/kbinMbin instances - https://fedidb.org/software/mbin

Or try https://piefed.social for something completely different.

Pamasich,
@Pamasich@kbin.social avatar

Ernest hasn't abandoned kbin this time, he did post an update last week.

Today, I'm going for a minor procedure at the hospital, and I won't be available for the next 2-4 days. When I return, I'll push all the corrections and fixes I've been working on and present plans for the near future.

Him not being back yet probably means the hospital procedure didn't go as smoothly as expected, but he's not gone on purpose.

rimu,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

The CSAM posts from 4 days ago are still on kbin.social. They have been reported, but no action taken.

Drusas,

That's partly a fault of not enough kbin users stepping up to moderate magazines.

ProdigalFrog,
@ProdigalFrog@kbin.social avatar

It seems like having more admins here would be greatly beneficial in combatting that problem. Is Ernest open to having additional admins? AFAIK he is the only one, and he's cleary biting off more than he can chew.

Drusas,

I'm talking more about admins of specific magazines. I don't know where Ernest stands on instance admins.

SharkAttak,
@SharkAttak@kbin.social avatar

So you went and thought: "Let's take this chance to make an unverified claim and advertise this other instances in a single post!"
but it was a shitty move, let me tell you.

Pamasich,
@Pamasich@kbin.social avatar

Ernest has said in the update I mentioned in my other comment that

When I return, I'll push all the corrections and fixes I've been working on

This means he has made local commits over those 2 months that simply haven't been pushed yet.

Also, there is in fact a commit made 4 days ago. Though not from ernest.
