dumples, in YSK that Kbin can subscribe not only to magazines and communities, but entire instances.
@dumples@kbin.social avatar

This is why we need more single topic instances. Time to join everything in:

https://kbin.social/d/startrek.website
https://kbin.social/d/ttrpg.network

I feel like there are so many good deep single topic instances that will naturally become the default

I would like to see subdomains for communities here. like @competitive.kbin.social for lots of sport-like things as an example. Also place (city, state, country) and fandom or other stuff like that. And make it easy for people to block that subdomain with allowances for the things they actually want to see (though I guess if it's still accessible by subscriptions or directly going there, that works too).

tea, in Remember you can donate to help support the development and maintenance of kbin and/or Ernest directly

Just because I was curious which platform takes the smallest cut:

  • Patreon takes 8%, plus payment processing (I assume another 3-5%). Let's call it 11%.
  • Buy Me a Coffee seems to take 5%, and Stripe takes 2.9%. Basically 8%.
  • Liberapay apparently takes 0% themselves, but 3-5% goes to payment processing through Stripe or Paypal. The site is funded by people who directly support the Liberapay account itself lmao. So 3% puts them in the clear lead.

I know Patreon is basically a household name at this point, but if you're open to a bit of change I'd encourage folks to use Liberapay!

MHLoppy,
@MHLoppy@fedia.io avatar

Just re: Liberapay's fees, 2.9% is their recorded average when using Stripe and 4.9% the average when using PayPal. YMMV based on e.g. donation size (where a small donation will have a higher % fee due to the processing fees being a combination of flat and %), currency / country, etc.

It's still almost always the lowest-fee option when available, but just wanted to be clear that you can't just jump in and expect to see ~3% regardless of circumstance.

tea,

That's a good point! I've edited my previous comment for accuracy!

"If the task are not done by the time allotted, I doth declare my resignation" bro you're a developer, not a politician. The fact you're actually giving us an update shows you're better than 99% of people who could replace you. Kbin isn't even in that bad a spot right now, considering the alternatives. You're doing fine, take your time to make sure whatever gets pushed out is up to your standards.

I did like 7 or 8 coffees for Ernest about two months ago when he was still very much visible and /kbin development felt like it was moving forward with big strides.

Feels like things have slowed down from the initial breakneck speed into something more "boring" and sustainable since then. But when the API is fully released another round of coffees or two is sure to follow - for Harriette as well when Artemis is usable for kbin.social.

Edit: I only saw Ernest's latest update now and appreciate his effort for openness. Here's hoping his private situation improves quickly and he doesn't feel like he is letting us (and himself) down somehow. He's doing good but a small heads up every now and then is much appreciated.

You're doing great Ernest, don't be so hard on yourself!
As for funding the project long term, if Patreon/Coffe/LibraPay ever stop being enough, maybe a Wikipedia-like style banner on the top of the page asking for donations could work? I think it's more than fair to remind people to help pay for the upkeep of the free project they use, and if they have a problem with it they can go fork (it) themselves!

slow and steady wins the race :)

lots of people trust you and from what I can tell you have a great team around you.

dont fret, it will be ok.

maybe just delegate a bit more out to some deputies you have confidence in.

Building something this large completely as a volunteer service is commendable, honestly. Most people wouldn't think of taking up something like this.

This place is completely usable for me and bugs have become noticably less frequent. Most features I need are on here. You've done a good job, especially for so much of the work being done by a single person. I can only write a simple script of code, lol. In the future, just consider bringing in some people to help out on Kbin (especially with moderation).

If you need to take a break, delay some updates, or just step back, do so. Your personal matters need to be resolved first, and us random internet strangers can come later. You can stick to the deadline if you'd like, but I think it's more stress you don't need at the moment. It won't kill Kbin if some features took longer to come out.

HipPriest, in Is Kbin dying? I wanted to address the deleted thread and provide some insight into the current situation.

If end of September is a self imposed deadline why not just extend it a little? I don't feel like you've got anything to prove here and you certainly shouldn't in my book

I'm always telling people in my team health/family etc comes first (from learning the hard way myself)...

Obviously if that's not possible for reasons we don't know that's different. But I honestly enjoy using Kbin in its current state pretty much daily and I think most people here would agree you've done a cracking job on it.

Hope things work out for you either way

@ernest @fr0g There's nothing you have to apologize for. We know Kbin is a passion project and we feel the same passion for it.

I don't see anything wrong with your example post. It loads just fine.

Don't sweat it @ernest.

@downpunxx is trolling - he just reposted the same question here. I'm guessing it's the operator of one of the spam networks you shut the door on.

downpunxx,
@downpunxx@kbin.social avatar

it's not trolling or spam, it's just me being a fucking idiot. my apologies. i had two domains blocked, and in doing so, triggered a bug which kbin users sometimes run into, that being specifically not seeing comments if they have any domains blocked, i had two, i deleted the blocks on the domains, and presto, like magic i can see comments. no spam, just stupidity, mine.

hey @earnest, original (and multiple since my bad poster here) I just wanted to drop a note here, and wanted to thank you for your response. i couldn't see any replies to my original thread this morning, figured it was users that i had blocked trolling me through some loophole in the blocking/"not really blocking" feature, and reposted a couple times today.

i will stop doing that now that you sent me that message, i'd sure like to see the other replies to this thread (your thread) but can't see a single comment.

take your time, do your thing, i truly utterly and gratefuly appreciate you taking the time out to respond to this, and your efforts, preivous and ongoing are valued and i'm just glad kbin is a workign alternative to lemmy. wish you nothing but good for your family, and other ongoing commitments, and here's to the future of kbin!

You are crushing it, in my view, @ernest. Thank you for all you do for this community, but you can give yourself some room to breathe. We're all doing okay as long as you're okay.

You might reach out to https://indieweb.social/@dries. He's talked openly about some of the challenges his project has had scaling and less openly about how personally he takes it when he can't solve problems with the project/contributor community. Drupal is a very mature community that has been able to foster a lot of trust between longtime contributors. What you've accomplished with Kbin already is amazing. Give yourself time to figure out how to delegate in a way that works for you. Focus on finding the right people and process over an arbitrary date.

Kbin FTW! Thank you Ernest, and the rest of the team. As a reddifugee, I feel I've landed in the right instance. And on the 'end user' side I'm committed to fostering the good growth of the magazines (m/SantaFe, m/Photobiomodulation) I've started. All of us together, we're building a better fediverse. I feel very hopeful.

For desktop browsers, I like it better than regular lemmy. Admittedly, I'd like to use a client with it so I look forward to an API for mobile clients, but I'm pretty happy as a desktop user.
