Hi Ernest, just a little message to tell you that we can wait. Give your family issues priority. First things first. Thanks for all the work done.

Sadly, I just filtered the whole science instance, as it’s nothing but spam

dunno, i kinda got into running an instance after reading about all the hard work you put into it. it would be hard for me to separate the ernest from the kbin ... so, dont do that?

take your time, take care of yours. this shit will be here

ryan, in Is Kbin dying? I wanted to address the deleted thread and provide some insight into the current situation.

I've given myself a deadline to resolve all my issues and release the first official version by the end of September. If I can't meet the deadline, I will step down from leading the project and transfer full rights over the repository and instance to the contributors.

Ernest, please don't be so hard on yourself. Deadlines slip, even for products formally released by companies, and this is more of a hobby frankly. I think what might help is less of a deadline and more of a roadmap - like, here are the major bullet point items we want to target for release by end of 2023, by end of Q1 2024, and sometimes those slip but then the roadmap can be revised.

I've been updating my own kbin instance pretty regularly, every couple of weeks, and I've seen things become more stable over time (less frustrations in upgrading, more features, etc). I'm quite happy with the progress so far. This project has grown so much in such a short time, and the fact that the kbin issues matrix is much quieter than it was speaks to the growing stability of the platform.

As far as kbin.social itself, I would agree with some other folks that you might need more volunteers on the actual instance administration and moderation front.

And as far as spam - email, the original federated messaging platform, still has that problem! Each email provider has to handle it on their own, using increasingly sophisticated methods, and they're still not perfect and it's been decades. Yes, spam is frustrating, but due to the nature of ActivityPub we will always be in an escalating war with spam. It will never be solved, only mitigated for a time.

Anyway, perhaps I've written too much here, but I have a ton of confidence in this project and also in you, and I hope you look back and see how much has been accomplished in a short amount of time, how much kbin.social has grown, and how the amount of other contributors indicates an overall great level of confidence in what you've created.

Darkrai, in Is Kbin dying? I wanted to address the deleted thread and provide some insight into the current situation.
@Darkrai@kbin.social avatar

Take time for yourself, I don't think anyone's going to blame you for that. And honestly, I don't have any issues with the current state of Kbin, there's a couple bugs here and there but it's entirely usable otherwise. Finally, I think giving yourself a deadline to resolve personal issues might be counterproductive and make you more stressed than you should be. It sounds like you're already taking steps to help spread the workload around, I would just keep spending a little bit of time helping out the team do some stuff you can't do until you're able to get a better work life balance or something.

I guess I'm trying to say, things are great to me and I imagine you're getting that unfortunate side effect of only having people who have something to complain about reach out whereas everyone who has everything going well isn't saying anything. So, in my opinion, you can stay to course (as long as it isn't killing you mentally) and I don't think the site is suffering any for it.

ShadowRam,

I'm just glad they found some time to update us on the current situation!

Thank you @ernest for all you do and all you have done!

Absolutely do not want to see you run yourself into the ground over kbin matters, your family and your health come first.

I don't question your judgement, but I think the "step down" bit is a bit extreme, even if you fail to meet the deadline. Worst case, maybe let the community appoint a second-in-command temporarily to get some things moving along while you take a well deserved break?

McBinary,
@McBinary@kbin.social avatar

Agreed, stepping down is a bit heavy handed. There are a lot of moving parts, it's okay to take time for your self and let others take up the reigns temporarily if you need to. I've seen quite a lot of merges on the core recently - so it's obvious things are moving in the right direction.

Brome, in Why is /kbin federation with Lemmy and Mastodon usually broken?
@Brome@kbin.social avatar

I don't know if this is part of what OP is referring to, but the unofficial FAQ says:

Finally from Mastodon, you can Reply, Like, and Boost /kbin posts. You can also follow /kbin users and subscribe to /kbin magazines.

I admit that Mastodon users can indeed subscribe to /kbin magazines, but it seems useless to do so: even if I subscribe to a magazine from Mastodon, the content added to the magazine will not appear in its feed.

e569668, in Is there a way to have a feed of people you follow in kbin?
@e569668@fedia.io avatar

You should be able to see microblog posts of accounts you follow at https://kbin.social/sub/microblog

fr0g,

Hmm, so far that is only showing the microblog posts that are tethered to the magazines I sub, but I also don't really follow many people yet so maybe they have just been drowned out.

e569668,
@e569668@fedia.io avatar

Interesting, I've heard people say the same before. I do always sort by newest myself, but I sub to a bunch of magazines and also, say, three mastodon accounts, and that page is basically just solely the mastodon posts, very rarely do I see microblog posts in lemmy/kbin. I guess a filter of magazines vs users would be useful

Edit: Also, is the default view all time for you? I could see that causing a problem as well if it's hot / all time. I mainly have three bookmarks: /hot/12h, /sub/newest/24h, /sub/microblog/newest/1d. Getting all results for all of time by default seemed a bit weird to me, especially for microblog posts

fr0g,

The default view appears to be hot, but changing to new does not do much (is there an actual difference between sorting new/x and new/y? Specifying a time frame for new sorting seems kinda pointless).
I think the issue here is probably that I'm subbed to a magazine that has set up a fairly common hashtag (#opensource) for its microblog, so it naturally pulls in a lot.

e569668,
@e569668@fedia.io avatar

Definitely, you're right that new timeframe doesn't matter, I meant to type hot all time xD I would expect that to potentially grab like whatever was boosted most in the past but then again the algorithm does tend to show newer things even under hot.

Yea the tag system might need a bit of work. It works great for some magazines, but for others not so much. For example m/help is supposed to be a magazine for kbin help but it pulls in everything under #help which can be anything in the fediverse. I did see someone suggest a way for a magazine to remove it defaulting to using the tag of its name, which doesn't seem like a bad idea to me

e569668,
@e569668@fedia.io avatar

In hindsight I remember why I filter newest to a timespan, so wanted to make note of it. Right now:
https://fedia.io/m/kbinMeta@kbin.social/microblog/newest 500s for me but
https://fedia.io/m/kbinMeta@kbin.social/microblog/newest/1w is able to load. so cutting off some of the older posts helps me run into less 500 issues, and I generally don't care too much about old posts unless I'm searching for something. that might be a fedia specific thing though, not sure how 500s are on other instances

ContentConsumer9999, in positive experience with /kbin automatically bringing in older comments and posts to newly subscribed community

Do you know of any way to "force update" threads without having another account? Can you do something similar to force searching communities?

RoundSparrow,

Can you reword your second question? 'force searching communities' - not sure why you would want to force or automate a search.

ContentConsumer9999,

So when a community isn't in kbin yet you can search @[community name]@[instance] to create it. I was asking if a similar thing is possible with threads.

static,
@static@kbin.social avatar

Yea that works for single posts, use the fediverse icon on the remote server for the proper url to search.
You don't get the reply's but you can search like that on a single reply too.

ContentConsumer9999,

What's the "Fediverse icon"?

static,
@static@kbin.social avatar

For lemmy it's the rainbow coloured hexagon on a post or comment.

ContentConsumer9999,

For some reason I can only see the icon next to comments but just pasting the top link works for posts.

static,
@static@kbin.social avatar

Then just try the url itself.
Do you have an example of what you want to pull in?

static,
@static@kbin.social avatar

yes, if that icon is missing you can just use the url.

RoundSparrow, in positive experience with /kbin automatically bringing in older comments and posts to newly subscribed community

Although I've found one area that Lemmy to kbin doesn't seem to work when bringing in older content when a new vote is done.

Instance: StarTrek.website Lemmy. comment thread: https://startrek.website/comment/2051539

The copy on kbin.social does not seem to load the thread that starts with user @jet
https://kbin.social/m/quarks@startrek.website/t/404007/Favorite-sci-fi-film-thats-not-Star-Trek/oldest

Not sure what is going on under the hood where those won't copy into kbin.

static, (edited )
@static@kbin.social avatar

I think hackertalks.com is misconfigured, their posts do not federate to kbin. And I cannot add their magazines to kbin.social.

My best guess : https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ansible/pull/114

Voyajer, in We really need a way to block communities on mobile without having to actually enter them.
@Voyajer@kbin.social avatar

Where else would you put it, a block button on every single post?

JowlesMcGee,
@JowlesMcGee@kbin.social avatar

I mean, yeah, you could put "block magazine" under the "more" options. I don't think it would take up that much more space, and you wouldn't even see it unless you clicked "more"

daredevil, in Why is /kbin federation with Lemmy and Mastodon usually broken?
@daredevil@kbin.social avatar

I'm not OP, but I've been having issues in regard to consistency when trying to federate microblogs to kbin magazines

simonwood, in The Unofficial Guide to /kbin is now available!
@simonwood@kbin.social avatar

This is great. I've not created a magazine but I've been curious about how Mods associate microblog posts with the magazine. I'm assuming that's through the "Tags" tab you describe on the moderation page.

There are a couple of things I'm still puzzled about, one is the distinction between upvote/boost (despite having been on here for a couple of months and read several explanations I'm still confused). The other, though it is a bit niche, is how to subscribe to an entire instance, which I know is possible (I think I even did it once) but is a very well hidden feature...

unofficial_kbin_guide,

This is great.

Thanks!

I've not created a magazine but I've been curious about how Mods associate microblog posts with the magazine. I'm assuming that's through the "Tags" tab you describe on the moderation page.

Yep. Any tags associated with a Magazine will pull in those posts that include those tags.

one is the distinction between upvote/boost

Upvotes (Favorites) are like reddit upvotes and boosts are like Twitter's retweets. So when you favorite something, you are saying, "Hey, Fellow Subscribers, this is interesting." When you boost something, it is like saying, "Hey Fediverse, check this out!"

how to subscribe to an entire instance

To subscribe to an instance:

  1. On the channel, click the instance name. (For threads, it is next to the title.) Alternatively, If you know the instance name, you can enter the url https://kbin.social/d/<<instance-name>>. For example, https://kbin.social/d/lemmy.world. Either of this methods will land you on the instance's domain page.
  2. On the domain page, click subscribe located in the side panel.

Thanks for these questions! I will add them to the Guide.

simonwood,
@simonwood@kbin.social avatar

Great explanation. I think the "Hey Fediverse" thing is what threw me. The up/down votes are familiar from Reddit. I was looking for how boosts would show within Kbin because they appear to be nothing more than an additional popularity metric (which seemed superfluous when you have upvotes) but I'm following myself from Mastodon(!) and I boosted your reply and I can see it from over there...

Unfortunately, this has not been the case in my experience. I have a tag associated with a magazine I run. When I search #residentevil, I'm able to see several posts that don't get pulled to my magazine. Would you have any suggestions or tips?
