Has there been a change in sourcing new magazines? Last time I tried it I couldn't get anything to matriculate, at least not kbin style with searching etc. Big turn off for me but otherwise mbin seems like the best fit.

@rhythmisaprancer@kbin.social avatar

Maybe I should reach out to the person who runs the mbin instance I am on. They were a kbin person before and may have some insight. An mbin version of this meta would be helpful, as mentioned!

This is a good discussion here. I'm sure I am not the only person to have other accounts (an mbin and a lemmy) but I am pretty invested here. But your #1 option has some relavent points.

Edit to add I have been digging the microblogs and miss that from what I can see on mbin. Maybe my error. I can't even find them.

I'm seeing more microblog posts (kbin.social)

Is anyone else? One of the reasons I was interested in /kbin over other options was this feature, but I don't remember seeing them on subscribed or all. Is this new? I'm kind of intimidated by it but ultimately know I want to interact. I'm seeing some cool stuff! It's all on magazines I have subscribed to.

I'm not sure, it is set there now but I no longer see the posts... Must be a setting somewhere.

CDC Warns of Cow-to-Human Transmission of H5N1 Bird Flu in Texas (scitechdaily.com)

A Texas farm worker contracted H5N1 from dairy cattle, indicating a new route of transmission for the virus, which has a high mortality rate and diverse symptoms in humans. The United States’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a health alert after the first case of H5N1 a

This isn't really exciting to read. I really appreciate the article handling this as strict information, it doesn't seem to have any loafed terms or forecasting in it. As you say, it is very accessible and probably the best way to digest this!

Thanks for sharing it. I am curious to see how this manifests.

I am definitely not qualified for instance level moderation, but may be for a magazine. Is that part of what you are looking for? I did put a request in for one a ways back, but perhaps am not qualified for that, either. It would be a good step i think. But I don't know. I can go thru the abandoned list again.

Thank you for more great things!

I see a little arrow device but cannot get it to do anything. But I am using the PWA right now.

Thanks also @piotrsikora!

Ya some things seem to not be federating right now for some reason. I can still see them, tho. Older threads.

Good, I appreciate your history posts!

/kbin March update (kbin.social)

I'm feeling a bit better. Starting today, I'll be returning to work as much as possible. This week will likely be spent catching up on tasks, replying to emails, reading overdue comments, etc. I also need to work with Piotr on instance infrastructure. I'll be more actively handling spam as well, but it's clear that we need...

It's good to see you posting again. Many of us are willing to do things to help out as our skills allow 🙂 Be well.

rhythmisaprancer,
@rhythmisaprancer@kbin.social avatar

I agree that it would probably be helpful to have more than one person running the program, but I also understand it can be hard to let a project go. I really like kbin, but will admit I set up another account elsewhere. It isn't as nice as kbin. I don't know rust but will definitely step up to moderate! Learning new things is good. I'll do it. Happily 🙂

rhythmisaprancer,
@rhythmisaprancer@kbin.social avatar

Are there some key magazines that need it? I will step up, if only to play whack a mole as I understand it.

rhythmisaprancer,
@rhythmisaprancer@kbin.social avatar

Ya I've perused the list, but there doesn't seem to be overlap. Maybe I should just grab one, any one, to get the hang of it.

rhythmisaprancer,
@rhythmisaprancer@kbin.social avatar

We could at least offload some work from Ernest

rhythmisaprancer,
@rhythmisaprancer@kbin.social avatar

I'm not sure how to request that one since it has an active owner. I did request another that was available.

rhythmisaprancer,
@rhythmisaprancer@kbin.social avatar

I don't have anything to add but appreciate you beginning the discussion. It seems that all instances will periodically face this issue; perhaps it would be good to have a proactive plan on place for when it becomes relentless.

rhythmisaprancer,
@rhythmisaprancer@kbin.social avatar

What all is involved on moderating? I haven't gotten involved in any of that, I come from a bulletin board back ground, not reddit, but I am sure I am not the only person without a relevant background who is willing to be helpful in some capacity. It will just all be new. But it seems like having a warm body to delete posts could help a lot!

rhythmisaprancer,
@rhythmisaprancer@kbin.social avatar

I'm not sure what KES is but if I just scroll a bit then what u want to read or what I am writing is clear of the arrow. I don't use the arrow and am indifferent to it but I imagine others may like it. I use the PWA.

That's my solution 🙂

rhythmisaprancer,
@rhythmisaprancer@kbin.social avatar

Progressive web app. You install it from your browser, and it runs from your browser, but you get a special icon to launch it. Probably more To it than that, but that's the most I think I know enough to say haha!

rhythmisaprancer,
@rhythmisaprancer@kbin.social avatar

I don't understand why they use steps. Who counts steps? It is more individualized than a distance, but my gosh, who is out there saying 4,981, 4,982, ...? I know roughly the distance of my pace and could convert.

It really sounds like we need folks to get out and do it, tho!

Hmm well that explains why I am a hairy morning person!

rhythmisaprancer,

It looks like that poster may be a bot or troll. They just joined and somehow have made their own magazine and then crossposted from that mag, TO that mag, several times...

rhythmisaprancer,
@rhythmisaprancer@kbin.social avatar

I don't personally have any issues with the website on mobile, I wonder if it could be browser related? I'm also not expecting perfection from something that hasn't been around very long, and never was on reddit so have nothing to compare it to.

I think you have valid points about "dealing" and "learning" and for some, that will be a turnoff. For me, it is an adventure 🙂

rhythmisaprancer,
@rhythmisaprancer@kbin.social avatar

Hmm, I'm using Mull but I don't think that would make a difference.

In any case, this is probably a good discussion to start, thanks for doing it!

Thank you for posting this! A nice refresher as I had forgotten.

Fear of the human “super predator” pervades the South African savanna (www.cell.com)

Lions have long been perceived as Africa’s, if not the world’s, most fearsome terrestrial predator,the “king of beasts”. Wildlife’s fear of humans may, however, be far more powerful and all-prevailing, as recent global surveys show that humans kill prey at much higher rates than other predators, due partly to...

It was just a recording of a human voice! It would be interesting to test this on other continents with large predators and prey.

I don't get on every day, but am only asked to log on about once a week as @HipPriest mentioned. Firefox on PC and Android.
