dangblingus, in David Lynch’s Dune Is Returning to Theaters for two days in February for the 40th Anniversary of it's original release

Doesnt deserve the hate it gets. The VO thoughts from the book translate disastrously to film, but it’s pure 80s camp and still hits all of the main beats from the book.

millie,

That’s always been my thought. There’s so much internal monologue in Dune, how else are you going to represent it? The Scifi Channel and Villeneuve both seem to just kind of like, leave it out. Herbert’s characters have rich internal lives, and arguably the most significant parts of Dune happen inside their heads.

The other adaptations maybe stayed closer to the source material for the details of the world in some aspects, but I think Lynch really nailed the feeling and some of the important ways of thinking that kind of get left out otherwise.

Thankfully, it seems like everybody’s done a pretty good job with the source material so far. People grumble about the Scifi miniseries too, but it did a pretty great job conveying the first three books. I’ve been a life-long Dune fan and they all hit the mark for me. That’s pretty rare in any adaptation, and I think it speaks to the strengths of the story itself and Herbert’s fantastic world-building.

I can’t even begin to try to like, rank my favorite Baron Harkonnen. They’re all fantastic and take the character in pretty different directions.

VindictiveJudge,

There’s so much internal monologue in Dune, how else are you going to represent it? The Scifi Channel and Villeneuve both seem to just kind of like, leave it out.

The miniseries doesn’t leave it out so much as work it into conversations that sound like they could have been part of the book, or have the characters wear their hearts on their sleeves more, which is why miniseries Paul seems like he’s always on the verge of a meltdown.

millie,

Sure, but it’s not really the same when it’s stated out loud. It becomes less about characters plotting against one another and more about characters just like, talking really openly about their motivations.

It kind of suffers from that weirdness you see a lot in anime where a character who’s completely alone will go into extreme detail about their plans or motivations. Basically an internal monologue, but delivered out loud into a space that’s mid-way through the fourth wall.

this film has an awesome cast, top to bottom

bionicjoey, in David Lynch’s Dune Is Returning to Theaters for two days in February for the 40th Anniversary of it's original release

A YouTuber I like once described this movie as being “like someone is trying to give you a learning disability”. That always stuck with me.

A YouTuber I know once described Star Trek as being “globe Earth propaganda”.

bionicjoey,

It was meant as a joke. Both the YouTuber in question and myself enjoy the film. He was commenting on how it feels to watch the movie if you haven’t read the book.

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Ah, yes that makes more sense. I love the movie but it is quite different. I also love David Lynch, so that helps.

lurch,

Youtubers who comment on movies are the real learning disability tho

@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

That stikes me as an awfully cynical take, not everyone was around for the original release. And being alone, watching a compressed stereo stream at home is just not the same experience. I’m curious how you might celebrate the 40th anniversary differently?

BroBot9000, (edited )
@BroBot9000@lemmy.world avatar

Watch it from home right now. It’s available.

lol nice edit 🤦‍♂️ The theatre experience has been vastly degraded since Covid. The price to fun experience ratio is out the fucking window. You can watch it from home with some friends or rent out a damn screening room and have a whole night of movies. You can download the full quality film and have zero issues. Also most people who give a shit about movies have sounds bars or full surround sound. Which have better audio balance than theatres.

Don’t need to get swept up in a marketing gimmick to enjoy old movies.

Jaccident,

I get that this is just your opinion, but you’re expressing it in such a negative and snarky way that you’re coming across as plain rude.

No need to be rude my dude.” – Spock (probably)

TheFonz,

And there it is. Every single thread. Just like clockwork. HEY EVERYONE CAPITALISM BAD AMIRITE??!!!

EmergMemeHologram, in StarTrek.website has updated to Lemmy version 0.19.3 (Clear cache/cookies in browser or remove+re-add account in app if experiencing login issues)

Why are lemmy updates so weird and disruptive?

I had to clear all my website data to log in via the website, which I’ve never ever seen any other website require.

The app situation was not much better, I needed to remove all my accounts on Boost and totally reinstall Mlem.

I have no idea, but in defense of the devs, there’s a reason they are calling it version 0.19 and not 0.5 or “1.0” There’s a lot to do, but look at projects like Mastodon a year ago vs today and they’ve made some dramatic improvements in terms of polish and usability.

Personally I think it’s a good thing Lemmy isn’t more popular right now, because there’s no way it could absorb Reddit levels of users in a healthy way.

RoundSparrow,

Same here. Had to purge everything, as all I would get was site errors.

Thank you for the update! Our trusty bot over at c/greatestgen had no issues and is still posting the most embarrassing episodes (so all of them) of The Greatest Generation and The Greatest Trek.

In Mlem you need to confirm your account before deleting it from the app, so I actually had to delete the whole app

Works now though.

ButtholeSpiders,
@ButtholeSpiders@startrek.website avatar

Glad to see this as I did all the above and it’s still not working in Mlem. I’ll give this a try though.

EmergMemeHologram,

Yeah try deleting the app, check your phones storage in settings > general > storage and search for Mlem. If you delete it it will remove all data from your phone, then you can reinstall and sign in again.

ButtholeSpiders,
@ButtholeSpiders@startrek.website avatar

Got home and giving it a shot now, I’ll write back for others seeing it too. 👍

Edit: You we’re 100% correct, deleting the app worked perfectly. Removing the account from Mlem did nothing and clearing browser cache did nothing. Weird bug for this version. 🤔

Hopefully people who browse lemmy via browser are finding a way to read this page. This post was failing to load for me even while logged out for some reason. Luckily I saw it from a mobile app and knew to clear cache/cookies, because otherwise I might have just assumed it was down.

We also have a Mastodon PSA up - unfortunately, with the post being difficult to access, there’s not too much else we can do - I ran into the same issue, myself.

Nice! I have been waiting for this, eagerly anticipating when I can block the entire hexbear instance (I made the mistake of commenting in one of their magazines once and despite how many days ago that was the sheer flood and content of the responses continues to be… let’s just say enlightening in terms of how they choose to exist). So this is fantastic! :-P

Wait It allows us to block instances from are account this is game changer! 🖖

OpenStars,
@OpenStars@startrek.website avatar

Yes that is the reason I wanted to comment here, to help spread awareness of this fantastic feature. Go into your Settings (not Profile), Blocks, on the left scroll waaaaay down, and you can block an entire instance. I was getting more than ten replies every day to a week-old comment, but since I blocked it today I have yet to see anything hex, anywhere. Silence is a beautiful thing:-).

I had a difficult time figuring out how to read the post on the website. Clicking the link itself just gave me an errror. I had to discover what that innocuous “+” was for to expand and read.

I recommend editing this post’s title to include the TL;DR.

Admin,

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, I’ve done just that.

ApostleO, in StarTrek.website has updated to Lemmy version 0.19.3 (Clear cache/cookies in browser or remove+re-add account in app if experiencing login issues)

Be advised: I am unable to log in using the Android app, Liftoff.

I first noticed content wouldn’t load. I removed the account, and tried to re-add it. It simply spins its wheels endlessly with no error or connection. I cleared the app data and cache, and now when I try to add the startrek.website instance, it says “Instance not found.”

I suspect the issue is with their app (looks like they haven’t updated since July), but I thought I’d post here so admins would be aware, and in case any other Liftoff users are having the same issue. I see a lot of comments about Jerboa, so I’ll be trying that app.

🖖

Admin,
@Admin@startrek.website avatar

Hm, I’ll take a look at that. I haven’t tried that app yet.

EDIT: Yes, looks like that’s a bug with Liftoff

Ummm yeah, I’m going to need to to submit a change request before all maintenance. The change management board will need to approve it before you can do anything.

Jk, thanks for all you do. After logging out and back in on sync, I’m back up.
