We’ve slowly come full circle, back to the age of cable TV.

Lwaxana,
@Lwaxana@startrek.website avatar

Instead of paying for a bunch of channels we don’t need we’re paying for a bunch of shows we’ll never watch.

TV shows should be released via RSS and a subscription is per-show for like $2 month. Then everyone can just have a single app with just the shows they want.

PlainSimpleGarak,

2015 - 2018 was glorious. Netflix, Hulu, and HBO GO covered about 95% of my needs. Barely pirated anything.

@Mr_Mofu@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Man that reminds me that I haven’t deleted all my posts and comments yet! Anyone got a good program for that?

NotAtWork,

If you delete content it just flags it as not public, Reddit will keep the data, they have shown this by undeleting content in the past.

Mr_Mofu,
@Mr_Mofu@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yeah, I just wanna rob the place of all the content I put on it. If they reinstate the comments and posts ill just request a complete EU compliant clensing

Maalus,

They don’t care. The content will stay either way. It’s been done before.

Arguably, anyone can scrape lemmy for free. Of course, it’s illegal, unless explicitly allowed by the license of the respective instance.

It’s sad for reddit though that they could have the option to protect their users from scraping, since they are big enough to enforce their rights. But yeah, profits.

Can I sue them btw to pay me for whatever value my comments and posts have created over there?

NotAtWork,

Scraping lemmy is as easy as setting up a server advertising it on Activitypub and all the data will be sent straight to you.

JoMiran, in BBC extends their Mastodon social media trial
@JoMiran@lemmy.ml avatar

My favorite part:

For some equivalent posts we’ve seen significantly larger engagement numbers for Mastodon compared to X/Twitter, particularly given the relative sizes of different platforms.

ValueSubtracted,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

Interesting, isn’t it? I saw a number of people making that same observation during one of the migration waves.

JoMiran,
@JoMiran@lemmy.ml avatar

I don’t do “Twitter style” social media much but when I did use my Mastodon account I found significant engagement. On Twitter my posts were invisible, but on Mastodon people found, liked, and commented on them. Conversation were good as well.

I was a beta tester for BlueSky and I found the same “invisibility” problem there. Same posts on Mastodon, Twitter, and Blue Sky and only the Mastodon ones generated responses or any acknowledgement for that matter.

Yet another service that I will never pay for. I’ll just keep sailing thank you very much.

As if Paramount+ wasn’t shitty enough.

Mango, in Reddit has a new AI training deal to sell user content

They literally already sell our content. Why run it through an expensive warp?

DoomBot5,

Because people were getting it for free. This is just a way to monetize it.

Mango,

I should just refuse to move my body altogether when I’m not being explicitly paid for it so I’m not farmed for content.

Lol, the AI is just going to emit nonsense like “holy hell”, “thanks for the gold, kind stranger”, “I too choose this guy’s wife”

The AI training cause is the least of my concerns with reddit these days.

circuscritic,

There are GreaseMonkey/ViolentMonkey scripts that work fine as well.

I still use Reddit infrequently, and delete what few comments I leave after a couple days using those scripts.

Glad I left that place months ago. What a sewer.

StillPaisleyCat, in Paramount and Comcast are reportedly considering a streaming partnership
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

SkyShowtime seems to be a pilot version of this in Eastern Europe and the Netherlands. Not that it seems to be doing all that well. However, I’m not sure what Peacock offers that’s original content so it’s questionable what a bundle would add.

In any event, this seems a daft thing to do when they’re trying to sell the firm. One of the biggest problems Paramount+ has had is that it doesn’t stick with a strategy and has been so tangled up in previous licensing or partnership deals that it can’t pursue its plans in any reasonable or systematic way. Tying the hands of a new owner with a poison pill deal with Comcast doesn’t seem to benefit anyone.

ValueSubtracted,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

I suppose it could make sense if they’re looking to break up the company and keep the streamer.

It does seem like bundling might be the new strategy for the non-Netflix, non-Disney players.
