LinkOpensChest_wav, in Spam from unmoderated communities/magazines
@LinkOpensChest_wav@beehaw.org avatar

It’s very annoying. All the spam is originating from kbin, too.

It’s not even “can easily be overlooked and move on” type spam either, it’s things like “hey kid, wanna buy some oxy?” Kbin admins don’t seem to be doing shit about it because these spammers keep coming back with new accounts, and I have yet to see a post removed from the kbin side of things.

It’s getting to the point that I hope my instance defederates from kbin because it’s just full of trash.

@canis_majoris@lemmy.ca avatar

There’s a bug going on that prevents Kbin moderation from replicating over the fediverse - what happens is they will nuke the threads but it will not reflect across the rest of the federation which is a huge bug. A lot of instances are either blocking their communities en masse to avoid defederating, or just flat out defederating.

LinkOpensChest_wav,
@LinkOpensChest_wav@beehaw.org avatar

Are you sure it’s a bug? To me, it sounds like just how it works. This is one reason beehaw is considering leaving the fediverse (and to be honest, I’d be thankful if we did, based on my recent experiences)

canis_majoris,
@canis_majoris@lemmy.ca avatar

Yeah the more I learn about the tech and design around these systems the more I question the philosophy and logic of the whole setup.

The massive vulnerabilities from cached and redistributed (federated) CSAM content, the inability to operate at scale due to various attacks from malicious actors, the lack of moderation tools to deal with the aforementioned issues. It’s just a pile of problems that other systems have literally already solved.

We should go back to forums. This format is overrated, we’re only clinging to it because we’ve been addicted to reddit for a decade and we can’t fathom going back to something as regressive as forums, even if they are logically the better solution for a majority of instances.

ive had the same experience. i think a remote moderation ability may help spread the moderation load around... that possible?

theKalash,

Yes, I think it’s possible to moderate a community on another instance.

@ernest After 1.0 is released, please take some time off. And try to delegate. Sending you some funds! Hang in there buddy.

Brome, in Why is /kbin federation with Lemmy and Mastodon usually broken?
@Brome@kbin.social avatar

I don't know if this is part of what OP is referring to, but the unofficial FAQ says:

Finally from Mastodon, you can Reply, Like, and Boost /kbin posts. You can also follow /kbin users and subscribe to /kbin magazines.

I admit that Mastodon users can indeed subscribe to /kbin magazines, but it seems useless to do so: even if I subscribe to a magazine from Mastodon, the content added to the magazine will not appear in its feed.

I'm not OP, but I've been having issues in regard to consistency when trying to federate microblogs to kbin magazines

"If the task are not done by the time allotted, I doth declare my resignation" bro you're a developer, not a politician. The fact you're actually giving us an update shows you're better than 99% of people who could replace you. Kbin isn't even in that bad a spot right now, considering the alternatives. You're doing fine, take your time to make sure whatever gets pushed out is up to your standards.

cthonctic, in Remember you can donate to help support the development and maintenance of kbin and/or Ernest directly
@cthonctic@artemis.camp avatar

I did like 7 or 8 coffees for Ernest about two months ago when he was still very much visible and /kbin development felt like it was moving forward with big strides.

Feels like things have slowed down from the initial breakneck speed into something more "boring" and sustainable since then. But when the API is fully released another round of coffees or two is sure to follow - for Harriette as well when Artemis is usable for kbin.social.

Edit: I only saw Ernest's latest update now and appreciate his effort for openness. Here's hoping his private situation improves quickly and he doesn't feel like he is letting us (and himself) down somehow. He's doing good but a small heads up every now and then is much appreciated.

@ernest @fr0g There's nothing you have to apologize for. We know Kbin is a passion project and we feel the same passion for it.

Don't sweat it @ernest.

@downpunxx is trolling - he just reposted the same question here. I'm guessing it's the operator of one of the spam networks you shut the door on.

downpunxx,
@downpunxx@kbin.social avatar

it's not trolling or spam, it's just me being a fucking idiot. my apologies. i had two domains blocked, and in doing so, triggered a bug which kbin users sometimes run into, that being specifically not seeing comments if they have any domains blocked, i had two, i deleted the blocks on the domains, and presto, like magic i can see comments. no spam, just stupidity, mine.

You are crushing it, in my view, @ernest. Thank you for all you do for this community, but you can give yourself some room to breathe. We're all doing okay as long as you're okay.

You might reach out to https://indieweb.social/@dries. He's talked openly about some of the challenges his project has had scaling and less openly about how personally he takes it when he can't solve problems with the project/contributor community. Drupal is a very mature community that has been able to foster a lot of trust between longtime contributors. What you've accomplished with Kbin already is amazing. Give yourself time to figure out how to delegate in a way that works for you. Focus on finding the right people and process over an arbitrary date.

@ernest Don't let someone with the red ass, who by the way is using a self-described beta product for free and without ads) get you down. You need to take care of yourself and your family first. We will manage. I spend more time on kbin than I do on reddit and mastodon combined. The few little glitches I have hit here and there are nothing. This is a solid product and I have a blast using it!

If anyone says that /kbin is dying ... well I will leave this right here:

I've given myself a deadline to resolve all my issues and release the first official version by the end of September. If I can't meet the deadline, I will step down from leading the project and transfer full rights over the repository and instance to the contributors. Of course, this includes the budget I mentioned earlier, earmarked for instance maintenance.

Silly. Your stewardship is great. Don't let unrealistic timelines get you down, especially ones that are self imposed.
