SuperSpaceFan, in October: kbin.social planned technical outage

I’m excited about the upcoming update that will roll out the API for kbin.social. Is there any updated information that can be shared about the timing of the roll-out?

Pamasich,
@Pamasich@kbin.social avatar

So, I made a new thread asking about the status and ernest responded to it.

It seems there's been some unexpected irl issues that have prevented ernest from properly working on the update.

However, I'm almost ready to continue on this journey, so you can expect that in the near future, there will be a banner with information and the update date of the instance and release. After that, we will work on avoiding such longer development downtimes in case of my absence.

tekeous, in Are there any kbin instances which are up to date with the source code?

I used to run an instance, and one of the reasons that I stopped was there is no good way to update it. If I pulled the source code again and recompiled the Docker it just wouldn’t start. Wiped the database and it still wouldn’t start.

This is why I still tell people Kbin is not production ready.

baggachipz,
@baggachipz@kbin.social avatar

That's a shame, because I much prefer the interface to Lemmy's.

abff08f4813c,

Interesting. I'm looking to run my own single user instance, so this is something to keep in mind I suppose.

zimzat,
@zimzat@kbin.social avatar

I was going to get involved in the development but after 4 months they still haven't merged the PR which makes it easier to onboard new developers (and also makes it easier to spin up new or update existing environments) so I've reconsidered where to spend my time. Which is a shame because when I saw kbin was built on Symfony in PHP I had very high hopes for it. I think the onslaught of new users completely overwhelmed the developer to where maintaining the instance took priority over developing it, which in the end makes it more likely to die off instead. /rant

(the PR in question)

Arotrios, in I'm having issues with being unable to post to Lemmy, commenting still works
@Arotrios@kbin.social avatar

Saw your post and I got curious, as it's clear your new threads aren't appearing on the instances you're posting to.

Test run shows that posting to lemmy.world is working for my account: https://lemmy.world/post/6641504 .

There's a couple things that could be happening, but I'm gonna go with my gut and ask do you have any domains blocked? There's been repeated issues with domain blocking affecting your ability to post (in fact, I had to clear all my domain blocking to properly post to kbin). This is the first thing I'd check.

The next thing would be to see if those instances or communities banned you. This seems unlikely, as it's affecting you on both lemmy.world and lemmy.blahaj.zone. The last thing could be that these communities have defederated or blocked kbin users due to past spam issues (@Technology is still blocked on lemmy.world due to this), but I haven't seen it implemented in this way before.

But I'd start with the domain blocking - 90% of the time when people have problems posting on kbin, that's the cause.

ZILtoid1991,
@ZILtoid1991@kbin.social avatar

Checked the blocked domains, it's empty.

Arotrios,
@Arotrios@kbin.social avatar

Bummer - looks like your post did show on lemmy.blahaj.zone, and I see that you got one up on @gothindustrial. Leads me to think it might be a community ban on @spookymemes for why your toy post didn't show up there. blahaj.zone was probably just slow.

@Fitik@kbin.social avatar

There's an issue for it on codeberg
https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/issues/551
But as can I see nobody is working on it at the moment/It's not implemented

ContentConsumer9999,

Ernest has said before that they were busy with real life things and I think their current priority is some anti-spam measures and better moderation.

There's a userscript I'm using that provides a bookmark feature (among other things, most or all of which I think are toggleable): https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/469597-kbin-usability-pack

No built-in feature as far as I know, though.

g8phcon2,

Holy cow that looks awesome

Bradley_, in We're back

Honestly im so worried about kbin at this point, it feels like when you kinle a bit of fire an then try to make it bigger, while worrying to extinguish the little bit you have. Hope it does grow...

Teppic,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

There is a lot of focus on this one flagship instance, but there are a number of other kbin instances now: https://fedidb.org/software/kbin

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

I'm honestly tempted to spin up my own instance as it is. Mostly to tinker with the software, but the fact that I can and relatively easy is pretty neat.

Same here. I've been trying to find the time to do this for a while.

adam, in Magazine bans not federating with lemmy.world (and potentially others)
@adam@kbin.pieho.me avatar

This is actually due to the way these platforms work. When a user comments on a comment or post on their instance it will be shown on their instance. It's then sent on to the owning instance of that comment or post. That owning instance then forwards it on to all interested parties (magazine instance, commenters instance).

Any instance in that chain can refuse to forward or broadcast that message due to a block, but the users own instance will likely always show that post. Ideally they would not do that and would be made aware of a block but that is a bit of a grey area in ActivityPub implementations.

MemeCollector,
@MemeCollector@kbin.social avatar

Thanks for explaining, but wow, that's really unfortunate and seems like something that needs addressing, especially since they're the biggest instance.
I thought the whole point was to have the freedom to associate and disassociate with the content of our choosing?

Is there a way to know if/when this is fixed? Because I honestly don't feel comfortable posting the content I do to my target audience if I can't properly keep the trash out.

Illecors,

What you’re asking for is control over other intance’s users. That’s never gonna happen.

cacheson,
@cacheson@kbin.social avatar

This is a software bug. Why would other normal instances not want to know about and enforce community ban lists? That just results in a poor experience for their own users.

Illecors,

OK, I misunderstood your case a bit. You’re talking about community ban federation. Yea, that does make sense.

doboprobodyne,

@adam thank you for explaining this. Am I correct to understand, then, that this is something about which we ought to approach the devs, rather than ernest?

Ernest's comment that ActivityPub tries to federate moderation (but isn't ?why) was very interesting.

It seems to me, on the face of it at least, that moderation is a key part of any social medium.

I thought I had a friendly tone and was being nice. I really did not intend to come off as aggressive. Rereading this I see how it can come off sarcastic and condescending instead of the friendly informational tone I was going for. Sorry.

hey @earnest, original (and multiple since my bad poster here) I just wanted to drop a note here, and wanted to thank you for your response. i couldn't see any replies to my original thread this morning, figured it was users that i had blocked trolling me through some loophole in the blocking/"not really blocking" feature, and reposted a couple times today.

i will stop doing that now that you sent me that message, i'd sure like to see the other replies to this thread (your thread) but can't see a single comment.

take your time, do your thing, i truly utterly and gratefuly appreciate you taking the time out to respond to this, and your efforts, preivous and ongoing are valued and i'm just glad kbin is a workign alternative to lemmy. wish you nothing but good for your family, and other ongoing commitments, and here's to the future of kbin!

@ernest I think lack of communication is a problem, but it's not end of the world. Some people gone Kbin and understand potential Kbin has, so don't throw line like you step down due delays. When reddit blackout happened some people noted that "Reddit founders" only noted 2 people... when years ago there was 3 founders. One was booted and now is buried as if he never was there. I would rather have you with your life problems than someone who have no such problems... Thank you for your hard work!

A thousand thanks for Ernest and everyone involved in the developement of kbin.

Kbin in its current state is a way bigger contribution to the fediverse than most of us will ever do and I'm extremely thankful for it. Take your time, you and your familly comes first.
Im sorry I dont have the resources to donate or know how to code, but if theres anything I can do to help please point me to it. I'll be more than happy to help. I know a bit of GIMP and Inkscape in case you need some light graphic work and I speak spanish if you need/want to translate stuff.

Thanks again <3 Hope you have a great day.
