admiralteal,

I mean, you know they aren't going to have adequate content moderation because they ALREADY don't. Lack of moderation is the #1, #2, and #3 best reasons to defederate.

Wanting to see proof before taking positive action is valid and sensible. But you can't pretend it isn't something you can already make reasonable inferences about. This is not a new unknown and pretending it is is ridiculous.

Email servers do not automatically feed content into and pull content out of your system. They only send and deliver to specific people at specific addresses. Federation is a firehose. You can close the hydrant before or after it gets hooked up to city water, but at the end of the day only people that chose to do things the sensible way will have dry socks and no water damage.

admiralteal,

you - Rahn - oos

You don't even need to change the spelling, just pronounce it a way that better resembles the underlying Greek. Problem is, no English-speaker needs to think about pronunciation for the other planets because the latin is just pronounced phonetically.

It's weird that it's the one Greek-named planet. If we're changing things up, it should just be Caelus to match the others.

admiralteal,

The study is very clearly talking about non-diabetic patients, too..

These are almost certainly people who want the weight loss primarily for aesthetic reasons rather than health ones, and may face these terrible health complications as a result. Makes it even worse, I think.

You're almost certainly better off somewhat "fat" than skinny by way of a drug like this. Especially given that "fat" is an entirely subjective measure and the "objective" measures like BMI overweight/obese are not based on points of any kind of phase change in health outcomes but are just somewhat arbitrary statistical variations. Dramatic interventions like these should be reserved for people that have dramatic need, at least until we have such an intervention safe enough and with few enough side-effects for over-the-counter sale.

admiralteal,

Your body has no sense of oxygen content of the air. What you sense is CO2 buildup in your blood (because it modifies the pH). In a pure nitrogen environment you can still exhale the CO2, but of course do not replenish any O2. It's not just that you won't notice -- there is nothing to notice. Your body literally lacks the sensory ability to detect it.

To be distinguished from a pure CO2 environment where you cannot expel the CO2 so you will feel the effect of being unable to breath.

After taking one or two breaths of N2, there will be so little O2 in your lungs that breathing will actually run your respiration backwards -- it will pull O2 out of your blood instead of bringing it in.

You'll likely experience a light euphoria, get a headache, maybe feel a bit dizzy. But this will happen so fast it's hard to even be certain -- unconsciousness in under a minute is expected and within just a few breaths is possible.

admiralteal,

Colonizing mars is a stupid thing to do pretty much full stop.

Mars cannot be terraformed. It has no meaningful magnetic field. That's a dead end for a planet's ability to retain a useful atmosphere and ward off cosmic radiation. You'll have to live in shielded, sealed pods to survive there, always. In which case you may as well be in space with access to abundant solar energy and less of a gravity well to contend with for your frequent resupply missions. There's barely any advantage to being on Mars compared to orbiting some random Lagrange point or the sun itself. I guess you can make use of some earthworks for civil engineering? Hardly seems worth it.

admiralteal,

Honestly, it's probably best to remember these people if you're politically engaged. They're the ones representative of the future of the Republican party. They're the ones who are pushing for all this fact-free Biden impeachment stuff. They're the ones who want to make sure teens are pregnant and trans people are dead. They're a window into a future of the country -- what little we have given their idea of governance -- that will happen if we let them.

FTC judge rules Intuit broke law, must stop advertising TurboTax as “free” (arstechnica.com)

The Federal Trade Commission's chief administrative law judge ruled that Intuit violated US law with deceptive advertising and should be forced to stop promoting TurboTax as "free" unless all conditions imposed on the free offer are immediately and conspicuously displayed to consumers.

MOST people qualify for free online tax prep. Do not let these fucking evil vampire fucks like Intuit get your money and spread the word to friends, family, and internet strangers.
