mdmrn, to random Looks like Tumblr is having issues and Fedi is getting another wave of new folks.
Welcome to the Fediverse, new folks!
A couple tips:
Boost freely
Try to put up for yourself an introduction post with the hashtag #introduction or #introductions or both listing stuff you're interested in
Use hashtags freely, they help folks find you and what you're posting!
Use Alt-Text in your pictures. It helps a lot!

RL_Dane, to random Dear #Fediverse app devs (including the #mastodon web interface itself): PLEASE stop autocorrecting my #CamelCase'd hashtags into all-lower-case.
That's just silly. You should be autocorrecting lower case to camel case instead! Grab the list of all hashtags with the same letters without regard to case, and if there's a plurality of them with the same capitalization (not counting all-lower-case), suggest that. Duh! ;)
edit: self-tone-policing. I come across a little too snippy.
simplenomad, to random Hmmm, every server I'm getting spam from has a new user in their public directory named yqqwe, and each one of these users is following mastodon_admin_yggwe on a single-user instance mastodon.tinynews.org. One can look at the 924 followers of this admin and they all are named yqqwe and they are all on servers I've been getting #spam from. #fediverse #moderation #administration
simplenomad, I've found a few of these servers do NOT have the yqqwe account on them, these tend to be more active servers with admins moderating/removing spammers. Good!
vees, @simplenomad TIL that yqqwe is a Mastodon hobo sign for "open sign-ins". I had one that last logged in today. Deleted.

ButterflyOfFire, to random I have reported 1 billion spam 🥲
gunchleoc, @ButterflyOfFire I add this link when I report the current wave: https://mastodon.de/@ErikUden/111940301222380638
hrefna, to random The recent incidents have hilighted to me one of my personal struggles with #ActivityPub
My first questions when developing a writeable API are 1. who can call this endpoint 2. what does the payload accepted by this endpoint look like?
AP is largely silent on (1) and is, for lack of a better term, actively hostile to (2).
Then I look at it from a database side and I try to draw a line between the use case and the schema and connect that to the payload.
Which again, AP is hostile toward

aral, to random #FediBlock snarfed.org and brid.gy for bridging fediverse folks to Bluesky against their will (and in likely contravention of GDPR in the EU) with typical Silicon Valley techbro sense of entitlement:

DavidBHimself, to meta I'm really tired of the holier-than-you people on the Fediverse!
No, Threads is not full of trolls and evil people just because Meta is evil. Threads is full of people who are not terminally online like we are. This is idiotic to want to block Threads by default. If anything let's show them there is another way.
No, the big Mastodon instances are not full of trolls and evil people just because they're the big instances. They're full of people who are into the Fediverse but for reasons that are theirs have no time, energy, or interest to join smaller instances. This is idiotic to want to block such instances. If anything let's teach them about smaller instances.
And right now, I see people building bridges with BlueSKy and I see very negative reactions from some people about that. Well... No, BlueSky is not full of trolls and evil people.
I'm so fucking annoyed with this bullshit attitude.
Honestly, if your response is "don't federate" every single fucking time, have you thought for a second that maybe, just maybe, you are in the wrong place? Fedi fucking verse. It's in the name.
If you don't want to communicate with people who are different from you, you're honestly no different from the people you are calling names. Please go to your instance that's defederated from everyone else, or even better, go on a closed Discord or something.
Fuck, I barely finished my second coffee and I'm already annoyed.

Gina, to random Hi #fediverse friends, can I ask for another recommendation?
Meeting headsets, what are we using nowadays??
graves501, @Gina
I usually avoid headsets and would rather have my regular headphones (e.g. in-ears for me) combined with whatever mic I have at my disposal since I have a couple of them. Headset mics are usually crap, a 5 euro clip-on mic will probably sound better than most (gaming) headset mics.Just thought I'd share this because we don't all have to own crappy/uncomfortable headsets with crappy mics :)
HarkMahlberg, @Gina Depending on your budget and how portable you need it to be, you could look at some entry-level streaming/podcasting mics and couple it with whichever headphones feel most comfortable to you. The two below both come with their own stands while taking up minimal desk-space.
noellemitchell, to random So the results from yesterday's poll made it clear: people on the #fediverse do not want to try #Bluesky! 😆
82% of people said they will not be using Bluesky now that it's open to the public for registration. I have to say I approve of this high percentage. 😄

janettespeyer, to random Who can see my posts? I am super curious as to how far this #activitypub can travel? Learning the #fediverse is interesting but a tad confusing for the laypeople like me. If anyone has an analogy do share. Visualizations help. #mastodon #server #instances
Pamasich, @janettespeyer I just saw this post from kbin, a Reddit alternative on the fediverse.
Linux_Is_Best, to random Att Fediverse
The flagship instance of Fire Fish is now OFFLINE.
The significance of this event is many of the Fire Fish Developers have previously come forward claiming the lead developer vanished. Unfortunately, the lead developer treated their project as a centralized project, meaning that they were the sole person making decisions, giving no access to accounts or code changes or even donations, despite having a team behind them.

minneyar, @tetra This sucks, but security vulnerabilities can happen to literally any project. Coincidentally, Mastodon also just released a fix for a critical security vulnerability.
They disclosed the vulnerability and released both a workaround and a fix for it nearly immediately after it was reported, which I think says a lot more about the trustworthiness of the project than the fact that a vulnerability existed.
tetra, It's not about the fact that there was a vulnerability, it's the fact that it was caused by evaluating JSON
raymondpert, to random Threads will allow you to follow Mastodon users by year-end, according to Meta meeting details
https://techcrunch.com/2024/01/12/threads-will-allow-you-to-follow-mastodon-users-by-year-end-according-to-meta-meeting-details/ #Fediverse #Mastodon #Threads
masterdon1312, @raymondpert I assumed it was already happening with some of the accounts that have odd numbers that look like they come from another social network.
raymondpert, I recently had a chat with someone on kbin, or lemmy who pointed out to me that Mastodon posts go all over the Fedirverse.
I'd love to see more interpolarabilty among social networks.
You can look up your own profile, or someone you follow, on kbin/lemmy and see the posts presented differently... in magazine format etc.
Try it. No need to sign up tp look around.

Em0nM4stodon, to random Fediverse Question 🎶👀:
I'm not a fan of YouTube,
and certainly not of Google (as you might have noticed...), but one thing I'm addicted to YouTube for is instrumental long playlists of music to work.
I. Need. It :blobcatheadphones:🎵Since I'm always looking for new ways to deGooglelify my life:
Do you know of any PeerTube equivalent for this?
Are there any instrumental long playlists/mixes for work on any PeerTube instances?
Or maybe another Fediverse platform would be preferable for this?
