There is an option for this under settings which is likely to be more fruitful than a comment in a thread.

how it should work on kbin.social [?]

In my view ideally upvotes and downvotes federate both ways, but I can also see why some admins might choose not to federate in downvotes.

I guess the real question comes down to what you do with the information.
I think currently the sort order is very heavily skewed towards boosts (which I actually quite like), but I do also sometimes wonder how it would look if the sort order was aligned with the reputation system (i.e. boost= two upvotes).
Having both sort options available might be nice, (noting that we'll not federate in any boosts from Lemmy).

If we did federate in downvotes the current sort order (which seems based on boosts less downvotes?) probably wouldn't make sense?

...I'm also be keen to see others thoughts on this!

A key difference here is we can see who downvoted which I think makes people more cautious to downvote. I guess Lemmy users aren't used to that however (but it might change their behaviour when they realise we can see!)

Indeed, and then there is a whole raft of searching, sorting and filtering options for Microblog posts (aka Toots) which kbin does, and which Lemmy can't even see.

Or just type it in using the Google stock keyboard on Android... 😜
Edit: and kbin does very much support emoji.

Hariette posted something a while back on Mastodon about illness. I think she said she was improving, but not much news since.
Hope she's OK.

The kbin code does now have an API, kbin.social just isn't running the latest version of the code.
On the rate of development and backlog of pull requests - it looks like kbin has just been forked (mbin) in an attempt to address this.

Teppic,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

E.g. https://kbin.melroy.org/api/docs
The API was merged about three weeks ago.
There have been quite a few bug fixes in that time too...

soweli-mute, to kbinMeta

kbin is lowkey kinda complicated lol

there's so many different kinds of posts, microblogging, threads, etc.

lowkey a bit overwhelming.

Teppic,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

@soweli There is certainly some truth to that, but

  1. it gets easeir farily quickly; and
  2. it's worth the effort! Other platforms don't give you the same power and breadth of access across the fediverse.

You'll find you get more interaction from within kbin (and also from Lemmy) if you use 'Threads' rather than 'Posts' (like this). Posts sit in the Microblog and are more aligned to Mastodon way of working - they are harder to see unless people already follow you.

There is a lot of focus on this one flagship instance, but there are a number of other kbin instances now: https://fedidb.org/software/kbin

Teppic,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Interestingly, because of federation, this sort of happens anyway. If you'd hopped onto another kbin instance, or even Lemmy much of the content from magazines here was still accessable.

Teppic,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Afraid not, each instance is independent in that sense so you need to go through the whole account creation again (although you can use the same username again, assuming it's free).
That said, as with this instance, you can browse without needing to be logged in.

In terms of other kbin instances take a look here:

This a known bug, which has been fixed, but the fix hasn't been implemented on kbin.social.
The temporary work around is that you can't have and domains blocked. The link on e659668's post gives more details.
This will be fixed in the update planned for the end of September.

There is even the folder icon as the logo to make this link clearer.

Please don't feel guilty for prioritising your family and yourself, that is 100% the right thing to do.

Also building on what others have said don't chase perfection by the end of the month, at some point you will have to draw a line and call it v1.00. It won't be, it can't be perfect ...but kbin is already great, and as you observe there is a lot of development which has already happened which isn't live here yet - I'm looking forward to when it does go live.

And finally, just thank you. Being admin of kbin.social is already a huge responsibility, owning and managing the codebase on top of that must feel like a huge weight of responsibility at times - it is really appreciated and we love what you have created here, it is already epic.

I think this is actually in the code now, the update just hasn't been pushed to kbin.social yet. (Hopefully soon!)
