So I talked to someone representing the developers of #PeerTube this morning about the mobile app they are working on in 2024.

They asked me a bunch of questions about usability and my expectations and a bunch of other questions.

The one thing that I kept trying to bring to their attention was that building an app that only let's you watch videos and download them was a waste of time if they didn't include something that content creators could find useful.

#Fediverse-Plattform #WriteFreely

Just tipped #IceCubesApp for making my #fediverse experience so much better and smoother. @IceCubesApp thank you for creating and maintaining that amazing #opensource application ☺️

With the news that Meetup.com has been swallowed up by Bending Spoons (with a track record of strip mining good tools to their doom), a alternative to explore is Mobilizon @mobilizon https://joinmobilizon.org/en/

@django @mobilizon I love that we're building a list of alternatives here!

@andypiper @django @mobilizon I think @linos (?) are working on extending/developing the wordpress activitypub plugin to be able to add events which are comptible with mobilizon etc

OK, I've got a question for developers. I'm working on an extended example for the O'Reilly Media book I'm writing, focusing on the federation protocol. I'm going to cover using HTTP Signature, handling and sending the important set of Activity types defined in the AP spec (Follow, Create, Add, ...).

Great to see the ActivtyPub Plugin continue on a fast development timeline:

The WordPress ActivityPub plugin has been updated to version 2.0. The major feature of the release is better comment federation. Comments are now properly threaded, which makes it much easier to follow and understand threads where people are replying to each other. Comments are now also bidirectionally federated. Creator @pfefferle explains:

“When you respond to comments from the fediverse on your blog, they will now be federated. This allows you to finally engage in (threaded) communication back and forth directly from the comment section of your blog!”

Browsing #hashtags is quickly becoming useless. Even important ones for #MastoAdmin like #Fediverse and #Mastodon are filled with toots of random #photos and #art. Some even promoting their #porn or #gamedev #gaming project. Even random #journal or #blog posts FILLED with random irrelevant hashtags. It's quite infuriating...if you know what I mean.🤦‍♂️😬

#LinkML may be a nice way to bridge #JSON-only and #LinkedData-based #ActivityPub

With LinkML schema's are written in YAML and can then be converted in a wide range of different formats.

Very interesting. I added it to the #SocialHub topic pondering whether AP should be considered JSON-first..

"ActivityPub and ATProto break in different ways.
is built around URLs and can "socialise" more or less anything on the Web, which is great, but they don't touch the underlying substrate—either you run your own server or you…are at the mercy of an admin.
, on its side, provides a good initial foundation for an extensible designed around user agency and credible exit.
…you can be guaranteed to be able to take your content elsewhere."

Thanks to that Mike Masnick @mmasnick link I just shared on the #fediverse (sorry Bluesky people it won't propagate over the #friendica bridge but this will) I learned that Hamish McKenzie, Substack co-founder, was integral to lining people up to sign the "anti-Substackers-Against-Nazis" letter. As Mike stated so well, "McKenzie literally organized the 'we support Substack supporting Nazis' letter signing campaign. Which, again, he’s totally allowed to do, but it calls into question his claimed neutrality in all of this. He’s not setting up a 'neutral' site to host speech. He’s created a site that hosts some speech and doesn’t host other speech. It promotes some speech, and doesn’t promote other speech. Those are all choices, and they have nothing to do with supporting free speech."

One of my favorite parts of this interview with @tchambers is when he wraps up with his 2024 predictions for the and including the things he's looking for as this crucial election year plays out. He gives a sweeping and insightful summary of the most important efforts now underway which will bear fruit this year.

How did we go from way too many semi popular english Misskey forks to literally only having one soon (Sharkey)

Firefish kinda had its moment but currently doesn't seem that much will happen

Foundkey while still maintained is not really meant for more than one user instances

Iceshrimp is currently doing an full C# or well rather they are doing their own thing not using the MisskeyAPI and also rewriting the frontend, which means when thats done they aren't really part of the Misskey Family of forks anymore

Catodon, from the start is not trying to be anything like misskey and more like a user friendly mastodon-key mix, but they are also interested in using Iceshrimp as a kinda upstream meaning they would also not be part of the Misskey Family of Forks

how did we go from being hated on for being another fork, to it being the only major true english misskey fork left, if doesn't comeback to life and if iceshrimp continues its rewrite

Kind of a rant, sorry. I see this happening in multiple projects lately.

Good gracious people. If someone wants to contribute time and code to the #fediverse let them do it! It’s not in your preferred programming language? MOVE ON. I promise you’ll find your flavor elsewhere.

Don’t disparage their choice. Let them be. Even support them with a like or a boost and then go find another open source repo you feel comfortable with.

We are in the process of developing a mobile application in 2024 🎉 :peertube:

Before starting the technical development, we felt it was important to understand the expectations of people who are watching #PeerTube videos.

We're looking for a few people to take part in a short 30 minutes video conference during the week of 15-19 January to find out more about your needs and opinions regarding the adaptation of PeerTube as a mobile application.

Send us a direct message if you're interested!
